Whitehern Estate   One of the most rewarding aspects of our business is to play a key role in the preservation and restoration of historic properties across Canada using our 3D technology and 3D expertise.   The Whitehern Estate, built from 1848 to 1850, is a National Historic Site located immediately behind Hamilton Ontario’s City Hall. Last fully renovated in 1939 by the prominent McQuesten Family, this stately home displays Victorian, Georgian and Edwardian design and construction influences.  Three generations of McQuestens lived in the home.   We were honoured recently to support the City of Hamilton and our colleagues at George Robb Architect in developing further plans to ensure that the Whitehern Estate continues to be carefully managed, repaired and renovated so that our students and the entire community can continue to enjoy this important part of Hamilton and Ontario’s history.   State-of-the-art LiDAR 3D scanning technology was used by our 3D experts at Applied Precision 3D to accurately and thoroughly capture detailed features to support the repair and restoration plans. Originally built in 1898, the Ontario Power Generation (since 1930) owned DeCew Falls Generating Station is an important part of Ontario’s history and modern life in the Niagara Region today. The plant was originally build to supply power to the electric railway system in nearby Hamilton.     DeCew Falls rivals the Pearl Street Station in New York City and the Whiting Station in Whiting Wisconsin as being among the oldest power plants in North America. Most of the others are of similar 1890s vintage.   Water from Lake Gibson travels through the penstock at DeCew Falls to the generating units some 250 below at the bottom of the Niagara Escarpment. Lake Erie supplies the Welland Canal and the Welland Canal supplies Lake Gibson. Interestingly, the original building from 1898 remains at the site today.   Still spinning today, four of the six generator units continue to operate at DeCew Falls providing renewable power to the Ontario power grid. These turbine units date back to the early 1900s. Today DeCew #1 supplies 20MW of power and DeCew #2 supplies 140MW of power primarily to the St. Catharine's area.   We recently visited the area and our Applied Precision 3D Team is proud to have provided expert 3D measurement services and expertise at DeCew Falls dating back to 2006 to help keep the units running smoothly at the plant. The Team has provided it’s 3D metrology expertise to numerous hydro electric plants in Ontario and as far away as New Zealand since that time!
