Originally opened in 2001 as a 65,000 sq. ft. multi-purpose, double ice surface area in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, the Yarmouth Mariners Centre has been a central part of the surrounding community for over 20 years.
The design has been completed on the new Yarmouth Mariners Centre expansion project, which will add a new fitness center, indoor walking track, several multi-purpose spaces, and an indoor Aquatic Centre.
Joining the team put together by Plus VG Architects and TEAL Architects, Aqua Plans Aquatic Consultants Inc. had the pleasure of providing the design and engineering work for the two pools and Spa within the new Aquatic Centre.
The bodies of water will include a 25M, 6 lane Lap/Competition Pool, an 1,800 sq. ft. Leisure/Play Pool, and an 4,000 sq. ft. Spa. The warm water Leisure Pool will contain basketball and volleyball nets, teaching steps, and spray features, while the hot water Spa will contain multiple hydro-message jets for relaxing and unwinding. Both pools will feature full perimeter overflow systems, and all three bodies of water will have barrier-free entry points. On deck, a large run-out waterslide will be the center of attention for the young children enjoying the aquatics area.
The intent of the Mariners Centre expansion is to create a new campus-style community hub for sport, health and wellness, entertainment and events that will serve the local and surrounding communities for years to come, with the expanded facility being an inclusive and welcoming recreational space for all.
