Remember the AC unit debacle at the 2024 Olympics this year? We measured the carbon impact: Initially, Paris Olympic organizers said there would be no AC units for housing due to the high carbon impact. However, portable AC units were eventually brought in to keep the rooms cool. Around 14,500 athletes and staff were spread across several buildings, and 2,500 portable AC units were ordered in total. Note that these numbers and the ones below are just assumptions. With each unit running for 24 hours, here’s what we found: Number of Units: 2,500 portable AC units Power Rating of Each Unit: 2.5 kW Hours of Operation Per Day: 24 hours/day Duration of Usage: 19 days Emission Factor for Electricity in France: [Emission Factor] kg CO₂e per kWh Calculation: Step 1: Daily Energy Consumption: 2.5 kW × 2500 units × 24 hours/day = 150,000 kWh/day Step 2: Total Energy Consumption (over duration): 150,000 kWh/day × 19 days = 2,850,000 kWh Step 3: Total Emissions: 2,850,000 kWh × [Emission Factor] kg CO₂e per kWh = ~255.7 tonnes CO₂e Equivalent to: ~1 milllion+ km driven on 2022 Toyota Corolla That’s a lot of cooling—and quite a bit of carbon too! #Paris2024 #SummerOlympics #AirConditioning #AC #ACUnits #HVAC #OlympicAC #Climate #CarbonImpact #ParisOlympics
