Today is the National Day of Truth & Reconciliation, a day to remember and honour the survivors of residential schools, their families, their communities and the children who never returned. September 30th was chosen for this day of remembrance because it was already an Indigenous-led grassroots commemorative day intended to raise awareness of the individual, family and community inter-generational impacts of residential schools. One way you can show your support and acknowledge the impact of residential schools on Indigenous people is by wearing an orange shirt. The orange shirt is a symbol of the stripping away of culture, freedom and self-esteem experienced by Indigenous children over generations and comes from a children’s story written by Phyllis Webstad about her experiences with residential school. #EveryChildMatters #OrangeShirtDay #TruthAndReconciliation
