About us
Aseniwuche Winewak Nation of Canada, A Fellowship of Aboriginal People, or AWN, is a provincially incorporated not-for-profit society based in Grande Cache, Alberta. AWN members share a unique history and ancestry as descendents of various Indigenous groups of Canada including Cree, Iroquois, Sekani, Dene-saa, Ojibwe, Assiniboine and Shuswap. In 1994, the seven communities, known as the Co-operatives and Enterprises, joined to form the Aseniwuche Winewak Society. Eight years later in 2002, the Aseniwuche Winewak Society became the Aseniwuche Winewak Nation of Canada. The membership changed from the seven corporate members to individual community members. Today, AWN represents over 400 adults and 180 youth and children. AWN provides programming and services to support the needs of its members. AWN is governed by an elected President and Board of Directors nominated and voted by the general membership every four years. Our Mission AWN supports education, programming and representation to build unity in our community by working together and preserving the land, language and culture. Our Vision We strive to work together to take care of our community and the land. Our Values Wahkohtowin – We honour and respect our past and present relationships. Environment – We respect and care as stewards of the environment. Unity – We strive for unity within our community. Community – We are the keepers of our language, land and culture.

“Ka-kí-kiskéyihtétan óma, namoya kinwés maka aciyowés pohko óma óta ka-hayayak wasétam askihk, ékwa ka-kakwéy miskétan kiskéyihtamowin, iyinísiwin, kistéyitowin, mina nánisitotatowin kakiya ayisiniwak, ékosi óma kakiya ka-wahkotowak.” “Realize that we as human beings have been put on this earth for only a short time and that we must use this time to gain wisdom, knowledge, respect and the understanding for all human beings since we are all relatives.” Each year, September 30 marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The day honours our children who never returned home and Survivors of residential schools and day schools, as well as their families and communities. Public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process. Orange Shirt Day is an Indigenous-led grassroots commemorative day intended to raise awareness of the individual, family and community inter-generational impacts of residential schools, and to promote the concept of “Every Child Matters”. The orange shirt is a symbol of the stripping away of culture, freedom and self-esteem experienced by Indigenous children over generations.

Consultation Land and Resources are proud to have hosted our annual TLU camp again this year on August 19, 20, and 21, 2024. It was exciting to see new and returning faces of our industry partners. We were able to share our culture and showcase various activities such as hosting a Sweat Lodge Ceremony for our guests, going on a nature walk where we spoke about traditional plants, an introduction on how to scrape hides, making dream catchers, and a small demonstration on how to make Bannock. We are especially grateful for all of the Elders and community members who came out throughout the event and especially on the Community night, held Tuesday the 20th where we had drumming, a Powwow demonstration led by members of Smallboy Mountain Cree and included several of our own dancers, and a round dance. The Community night is always a favorite part of the camp for both staff and our guests. Everyone was amazing and so willing to learn it was great to see, we hope to continue to nurture greater bonds with everyone and it was wonderful to meet everyone face to face. We would like to give a big thank you to all the cooks, cook helpers, craft teachesrs, staff and everyone who helped make the camp successful #traditionallandusecamps #aseniwuchewinewaknation #communitynights #industrypartners #TLUCAMPS .
