Enhanced Situation Awareness... If a camera recognizes the sound signature, it simply issues an alert… Did someone break into the building? Maybe it is just an employee pulling an all-nighter. Or is it an actual perpetrator? Audio analytics, available in many AI-enabled cameras, can add context to what operators see on the screen, helping them validate assumptions. If a glass-break detection alert is received moments before seeing a person on camera, the added situational awareness makes the event more actionable. In the world of security and video surveillance, the value of audio is often underestimated. While audio plays a pivotal role in intercom systems, its significance in broader security and event management contexts is frequently overlooked. This oversight occurs partly due to the privacy implications associated with audio surveillance, which is strictly regulated and varies significantly across jurisdictions. However, in-camera, or edge-processed, audio analytics that detects gunshots, yells, glass breaks and vehicle horns don’t require the audio to be recorded or captured in any way. This avoids violating privacy laws because the audio is processed instantaneously at the edge and never leaves the camera. If the camera recognizes a known sound signature, it simply issues an alert. It is oblivious to all other sounds. Audio analytics can also enhance situational awareness in areas where video is not allowed. For example, restrooms are a no-go area for cameras, but an analytic that detects glass breaks and yells can prevent such an area from being a complete blind spot. The Power of Audio Analytics Audio analytics, when processed directly within an AI-enabled camera, have emerged as a specialized niche’ for many security system installers and users. When a separate purpose-built audio system is beyond the budget, modern AI-enabled cameras can step up and do double duty, reducing the overall cost of installing purpose-built glass break sensors at every point of ingress. Using deep learning algorithms, the cameras can provide a range of audio classification and detection at the edge, including glass breaks, gunshots, yells and even persistent vehicle horns. Microphones Modern IP-based surveillance cameras often come equipped with built-in microphones, though some models offer jacks for attaching external microphones. Indoor camera microphones are particularly effective due to their design, which allows sound waves to penetrate through small openings in the housing. Tzu Chi Temple gets a Prosound makeover... Standing as a beacon of spiritual enlightenment and tranquility, the Tzu Chi Temple in Johannesburg has installed an AVL solution supplied by Prosound. In collaboration with acclaimed designer Dennis Hutchinson, Prosound crafted an audiovisual and lighting system to integrate with the temple’s sacred ambiance. A key member of the Prosound team, Charles, contributed insights and technical expertise to the project. “Tzu Chi was an interesting project, mainly because of the different elements involved; sound, lighting, video and the ability to livestream,” he said. “The main problem was to design a system that was flexible, but still easy enough for volunteers to use. We used a combination of hardware from different manufacturers to achieve this goal.” The lighting design needed to complement the temple’s aesthetic while meeting practical needs, with Hutchinson noting that they chose ETC Irideon architectural fixtures for their colour rendering and compact form factor. The Irideons are controlled by an Echo Touch panel, providing versatile presets for transitions and subtle enhancements without overpowering the sacred space. With livestreaming becoming increasingly integral to the temple’s outreach, the audiovisual setup had to cater to both in-person and remote audiences. Hutchinson explained that “everything is live-streamed, not only to outside of the temple, but also to various overflow rooms within” At the heart of the audio system are Symetrix W3 control panels which have been installed in each of the sanctuary’s five classrooms. These panels provide control over audio, video sources and projector functions from a single interface to enhance the user experience and operational efficiency. Hutchinson noted that when it came to sound, he faced the challenge of concealing technology. “It all had to virtually be concealed,” he explained. Transporting tonnes of delicate audio equipment by ocean freight is already a risk in itself, but when you have thousands of congregation members waiting for it, the price is that much greater Christian Mission Fellowship International (CMFI), headquartered in Suva on the island of Fiji, serves 120 countries across 5,000 churches globally and has a congregation reaching more than 30,000 worshippers. The World Harvest Centre (WHC) is the organisation’s main venue, which has the capacity to hold 3,500 worshippers, a full band, production crew and a 100-member choir. Since its construction in 1990, the centre has installed a variety of audio systems but none had been able to overcome the scale of reverberance that comes with a venue of this size... ...After hundreds of hours of modelling, the final speaker design was based on a Martin Audio WPM line array system with processing and amplification from Q-SYS. The church team wanted to retain and improve some of the existing Q-SYS backbone and converge it with the Martin Audio system.... ...Martin Audio’s DISPLAY prediction software was used to design a 56-cabinet WPM system consisting of a main L-R hang of 16 WPM per side, along with 10 WPM per side operating in two-box and one-box resolution modes. The array system is supported by six Martin Audio SX218 18-inch sub-bass speakers, with each driver individually processed and amplified. Despite challenges posed by rigging and structural steelwork, the CVAV team was able to hang a centre cluster and allow the steering of the sub-cluster... ...Finally, the church was able to celebrate the completion of their new sound system, with many island dignitaries in attendance joined by thousands more on the livestream.
