  • On Spirit of Children Day, we would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to our extraordinary partners, Spirit Halloween and Spirit of Children, for their continued support of BC Children's Hospital. This year, they’re hosting their annual donated pop-up shop, where kids and families can dress up and celebrate Halloween right here in the hospital! Over the past 13 years, their generosity has helped transform the hospital into a place where kids can simply be kids, from providing costumes for in-hospital trick-or-treating to supporting essential programs like child life, music therapy, and pet therapy. Together, we’re bringing comfort, joy, and healing to our young patients.

  • Thanks to generous donor support, BC Children's Hospital is revolutionizing pediatric care with groundbreaking 3D technology! Surgeons can now plan and simulate complex procedures before stepping into the OR, improving outcomes for kids with conditions like congenital heart defects and sarcomas. In 2023, over 100 surgeries were supported through this innovation — and we’re just getting started! Check out more exciting outcomes like this in our progress report.

  • Hermann had a profound love for gardening. He often dreamt of creating a peaceful space for children who were spending time in the hospital, hoping for a garden where they could find joy amidst their challenges. This dream became a reality through his generous spirit and thoughtful estate planning. After his passing, Hermann’s legacy gift to BC Children’s Hospital Foundation provided funding for the beautiful Live 5-2-1-0 garden and essential capital equipment. Hermann’s legacy continues to bring comfort to young patients and their families. Once a newcomer to Canada, Hermann’s many friendships became like family. Walks with his dear friend near the hospital inspired Hermann’s hope for a serene garden, and now that hope lives on. As we recognize Make a Will Week, consider the lasting impact you can make through your own Will. Leaving a gift can create a meaningful legacy, just like Hermann’s. Let’s talk about the power of legacy gifts. For more information on including BC Children's Hospital in your Will, visit our website https://lnkd.in/gYgbtncQ

We’re proud to donate $233,786 to BC Children's Hospital, Vancouver to support the Proteomics Research Suite at BC Children's Hospital Research Institute, including a highly precise mass spectrometer. This technology will enable researchers like Dr. Philipp Lange, Investigator with the Michael Cuccione Childhood Cancer Research Program (MCCCRP), to pursue innovative research studies in pediatric cancers, impacting kids in BC and around the world. Our team had the privilege of meeting Dr. Lange and learning how researchers in the MCCCRP are pushing the boundaries of scientific discovery to find the best treatments for children with cancer. This donation is part of a $3 million Ledcor commitment to North American children’s charities over four years. Funds were also raised in-part through our Employee Giving Campaign. #LedcorCares

On the surface, a monthly donor might look like a regular person. But inside, they’re something more: Resilient. Committed. Ready to face down childhood illness for as long as it takes. They’re ordinary folks working towards extraordinary outcomes. They’re the League of Mighty. Together, let’s show the world what monthly can do. Join our league at LeagueofMighty.ca

  • "Truth and reconciliation is not an event; it’s a structure. It’s an ongoing process that requires recognizing the truth before we can move toward reconciliation,” as Howard Grant, Executive Director of the First Nations Summit, and new board member to BC Children’s Hospital Foundation, shared last week.   “To know where you come from and who you are is the most important thing in life. It grounds you as a human being.” For so many children who were taken into residential schools, this vital sense of self and connection was stolen from them. Understanding these truths is essential for any path toward reconciliation.   As part of last week's event, Foundation team members received copies of Now You Know Me, co-authored by Joe Gallagher and John Matterson. Today we are inspired to spend time reading, reflecting, and educating ourselves on these important truths so that we may find new pathways to reconciliation.

  • Powerful milestones can be achieved when a group of extraordinary individuals come together with a shared vision. Last night, we gathered with esteemed donors to celebrate the establishment of the Team Nicky Hospital Chair in Hematology, Oncology and Blood and Marrow Transplant (BMT) at BC Children’s Hospital and to recognize inaugural chair holder, Dr. Caron Strahlendorf. Together, the Team Nicky collective has enabled the first-ever group funded chair at BC Children’s Hospital, raising $5 million to change the course of care for children with cancers and blood disorders.   This milestone was sparked by the passion, love and leadership of one family: the Cannons—Kelly, Darren, Nick and Clive. The Cannons have dedicated themselves to advocating for and supporting families who are facing pediatric cancers—as they themselves have.   Kelly Cannon’s commitment began decades ago, when she began volunteering on the oncology floor at BC Children’s. She came to intimately know the quality of care provided by health care teams, and the love and resilience of the families who relied on it. It was in March 2021 that Darren and Kelly’s own son, Nick, would be diagnosed with one of the rarest forms of pediatric cancers.   Nick had a better chance of being struck by lightning three times. It is this lightning bolt that has become the Cannon family’s rallying cry, symbolizing Team Nicky: the community that supported them throughout the most difficult period of their lives. Cheering Nick on as he entered his final round of chemotherapy, providing comfort in the form of meals and care items—and now, giving back in a monumental way to change the trajectory for children and their families. This is just the beginning. The legacy of the Team Nicky Hospital Chair in Hematology, Oncology and Blood and Marrow Transplant (BMT) at BC Children’s Hospital will continue to impact the continuum of care for decades to come. We are incredibly grateful for the generosity, commitment and vision of this community—standing together to empower world-leading experts as they realize their boldest ideas for kids in BC, the Yukon and everywhere. Thank you, Team Nicky
