Board member Cindy Stern passed away on August 18, 2024, at her home in Parksville after a brave battle with cancer. Cindy was appointed to the Forest Practices Board in August 2020, serving on numerous Board panels and bringing strategic insight and vision to the work of the Board. Cindy was a fierce advocate for the public interest in how forest and range lands are managed in BC. She cared deeply about forest management, understood the importance of the role of Indigenous People in forest stewardship, and was not afraid to challenge the Board to step into this space. Cindy Stern was a registered professional forester. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Forestry at the University of Toronto and, following a short stint in Ontario, moved to BC, where she joined the Ministry of Forests as District Manager for the Haida Gwaii and South Island Natural Resource Districts and Regional Executive Director for the Coast Region. For the past 16 years, Cindy operated a consulting firm that provides strategic advisory services to First Nations, industry and government regarding resource management, economic development, organization development, administration and intergovernmental relationship building. Cindy was community-minded and known for her critical thinking, passion for responsible resource stewardship and advancing reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples. Her wisdom, professionalism and humour will be missed.
