Excited to have attended the McGill Innovation Fund (MIF) Graduate Info Session, where I had the opportunity to speak about the valuable role MIF plays in supporting the commercialization of cutting-edge research. It’s inspiring to see how McGill University resources like MIF empower startups to transform innovative ideas into practical solutions that address the needs of humanity. “If you want to change something, it must go beyond the lab.” That was the message from Devendra Pal, Ph.D., speaking at the #MIF Graduate Info Session held this past Monday. The event gave a brief introduction to the MIF, and heard success stories from two past winners, Devendra and Roozbeh Siavash Moakhar. Both teams received the Develop award of $50,000 to invest in their research and help them progress from lab to market. Devendra’s team, Patholyzer works using an advanced nano-digital inline holographic microscope to detect airborne pathogens, and Moakhar’s team, Beeta Biomed Inc., is developing point-of-care diagnostic technologies to support rapid interventions of infectious diseases. It’s been over a week since the close of #MicroTAS2024 in Montreal, Canada and we would just like to thank everyone who attended, who gave presentations on their fantastic research, who ran workshops on Sunday, and who helped organise the conference behind the scenes! Thank you to all the sponsors, exhibitors and CBMS for supporting the conference, and helping to make it such a huge success! If you’ve been attending MicroTAS for some years, you know how special this community is and if this is your first MicroTAS, we hope you felt welcome and will become part of the microfluidic community going forward! We had over 1300 attendees from over 40 regions/countries, which is a bumper year for MicroTAS! This shows both the growing interest and development in microsystems research but also the strength of our community, returning stronger every year. A huge thank you to our 2024 Chairs, David Juncker and Aaron Wheeler, all their committee members and everyone at PMMI for all their hard work in organising such a fantastic conference, in such a beautiful location. MicroTAS 2024 will remain in the memories of everyone who attended for many years to come! Lastly, how could we not mention our ambassador from down under – Chips the Giant Koala who graced the exhibition hall and dancefloor of the banquet to get us all excited again for #MicroTAS2025 in Adelaide, Australia. Better care closer to home! The CDEF24 segment on Pount-of-Care testing was impressive with presentations from Nicolas Tetreault from Biron Groupe Santé | Biron Health Group, Allison Bodnar from PANS and Dr Marthe Charles from Vancouver Coastal Health. Point-of-Care increases equity and access. Patients prefer and demand testing closer to home.
