🧡 Today, our community came together to honor National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. 🧡 We shared the Seven Grandfather Teachings, shared coloring sheets with our kids, read inspiring books in small groups, exchanged insights, and recited the Personal Pledge of Reconciliation. Together, we're building a path towards understanding and healing. We commend everyone who took the time to acknowledge this important day, in any way that may have looked for you. We encourage you to regularly spend time educating yourself and learning more about how you can be an ally to the Indigenous community. #TruthAndReconciliation #CommunityUnity

💻 BGCES, Jamaal Magloire Foundation, and Digital Compass give away 100 laptops to our youth 💻 Last week, BGCES had the honour to give our youth over 100 laptops through the support of the Jamaal Magloire Foundation as well as Compass Digital. With speeches from Jamaal himself, our CEO Utcha Sawyers, and the Compass Digital team, they explored the importance of having access and how laptops provided them with a pathway to a brighter future. These laptops give our young people the space to take advantage of equal opportunity and resources. Naturally, we are removing barriers and making things easier for them. They now no longer have to stress to make sure their work is done at the library before it closes, and can get things accomplished from the comfort of their own home. We extend a huge thank you to our community leaders who continually give back. 🫱🏼🫲🏾💻💙 Jamaal Magloire Foundation Jamaal Magloire Compass Digital Utcha Sawyers

From August 13-15, our "Discover University" program at UTSC, in partnership with Toronto Community Housing and others, offered BIPOC students in grades 11-12 an immersive 3-day experience into university life. With workshops, interactive sessions, and panels, students explored the academic and social aspects of the university, gaining insights and inspiration for their futures. 📚🏫 This initiative underscores our commitment to breaking down barriers and empowering youth with the tools for success. Take a look at this short mini recap of one of our many summer bbqs we host across East Scarborough. ✨✨ Throughtout the summer, our youth team comes together with our communities to host bbqs and a safe space to hang out and chill. 🍔🎉 Our BBQs aim to build stronger connections with our youth and their families by giving them something valuable and positive about their community. Oftentimes, we see so many negative connotations around our neighbourhoods, and with events like this, we are able to bring the beauty of where we live, to the forefront. #BGCEastScarborough #CommunityBBQ #communityoutreach #scarborough

We are thrilled to share the highlights from our Race to Break the Silence event, a powerful two-day experience dedicated to addressing housing inequality and supporting the Yemoja Village project. 🌟 Day 1 began with a thought-provoking Fireside Chat at The Combine, featuring insightful discussions. We delved deep into the importance of connecting private and public housing and explored innovative solutions to create a more inclusive community. Day 2 brought us the exhilarating Race to Break the Silence on the beautiful Toronto Islands, and the Royal Canadian Yacht Club. Participants engaged in a unique scavenger hunt, fostering team synergy and networking while raising funds for a crucial cause. The energy, collaboration, and commitment from everyone involved were truly inspiring. Our mission with the Yemoja Village project is to develop sustainable, affordable housing solutions that will provide stability and hope for families in need. By addressing housing inequality, we aim to create a ripple effect of positive change that extends throughout our community. BGC East Scarborough and the MAAT Youth Innovation & Cultural Centre are deeply committed to this cause. We are creating opportunities for marginalized youth and young families in our community to have a safe and stable place to call home. Our goal is to empower the next generation with the tools and resources they need to succeed. A heartfelt thank you to our sponsors, participants, vendors, and volunteers for their unwavering support and dedication. Your involvement has made a significant impact, and together, we are making strides towards a brighter, more equitable future. Watch the video to relive the incredible moments from our event and see firsthand the difference we are making. Let's continue to work together to break the silence on housing inequality and build a stronger, more inclusive community. The main purpose of bringing forth unique teams through the Race to Break the Silence was to spread the word about Yemoja and encourage corporate and industry leaders to take a moment to understand the value of community and collaboration. By participating, they helped us highlight the importance of affordable housing and the role we all play in building stronger, more connected communities. Together, we aim to keep our young people safe and supported. With our commitment to helping hundreds of youth find homes every year, we often face the challenge of relocating them out of Toronto and into the outskirts for affordable housing. The Yemoja Village will change that by providing 47 affordable housing units, allowing our youth to stay in a community they know and love. This space will allow them to grow and thrive in a familiar environment. With the Yemoja Village’s core focus on affordable housing 🏡, it is a direct link to the impact of food insecurity within the KGO (Kingston, Galloway, Orton Park) area. 🍲 Our food and drink sponsors included both Nourish Happy. & Deja Bru Inc who offered both their time, products, and labour on both days to ensure we kept our attendees full and ready to explore the impact of affordable housing. At the Club, we provide meals to over 400 meals to individuals each and everyday, provide breakfast, and snack programs, as well as a local farmer food market to help minimize hungry individuals within the community. Through the Yemoja Village Affordable Housing Initiative, by providing an affordable place to live, we can help offset the cost of food and groceries.
