A group of our BK ladies enjoyed a night out last week at the Caboto Club for the Do Good Divas annual handbag auction in collaboration with Habitat for Humanity Windsor-Essex. Proceeds from the evening directly benefitted Habitat for Humanity and their housing initiatives.
Last Wednesday, the Bank of Canada cut its benchmark rate 25 basis points to 4.25 per cent, but that may not be enough to light a fire under developers who cite high borrowing costs for sitting on the sidelines. “I don’t think there’s necessarily a number that’s going to light that fuse,” said Brent Klundert, chair of the Windsor-Essex Home Builders’ Association. The Bank of Canada reduced the key interest rate by 25 basis points today, bringing the rate to 4.25%. It cited a slowing labour market and easing inflation as main drivers for the decision. Bank of Canada governor Tiff Macklem noted that if inflation continues to ease, it would be 'reasonable' to expect further rate cuts. Housing Minister Paul Calandra says the new Provincial Planning Statement builds on the government's Cutting Red Tape to Build More Homes Act by helping municipalities support growth through reducing and streamlining planning rules, simplifying approvals to build homes and eliminating duplication. Speaking on AM800's The Shift, Brent Klundert says these new rules are based on consultations with those in the home building industry. "That in itself was promising, knowing that the minister was going out to industry to get their opinion of how things worked and what the hiccups were. The highlights of what was published are certainly things that our association has brought forward to the minister as things that would help," he said. In the face of high interest rates, our government is working closely with municipalities to cut red tape and give them the tools and flexibility they need to build more homes. At #AMO2024, I was happy to release the new Provincial Planning Statement that recognizes municipalities know best where and what types of homes are needed in their communities.
Canada's housing minister says a recent boom in housing starts in the Windsor area is "unabashedly good news" — but he still expects the city to get more ambitious in planning for growth if it wants to access federal Housing Accelerator funding to support new home construction. Sean Fraser told CBC that several factors have contributed to recent growth in new home construction in Windsor, including lower interest rates and major projects in the city such as the Gordie Howe International Bridge and the Stellantis-LG Energy Solution EV battery plant. The chair of the Windsor Essex Home Builders' Association said the numbers reflect optimism among developers over Windsor's future, rather than robust demand at the present time.
