This week, Orest Sushko, Director of the Broadcast-Broadband Convergence B²C Lab at Humber Polytechnic, and Willie Perez, Engineering Manager of the B²C Lab, attended the 2024 Western Association of Broadcast Engineers (WABE) Conference in Edmonton. Orest, alongside Mark Corl (SVP, Emergent Technology Development, Triveni Digital) and Vladimir Anishchenko (CTO, Avateq Corp.), led an insightful presentation on ATSC 3.0 international market adoption strategies and presented novel applications of the new standard, beyond television program delivery. ATSC 3.0 has been adopted and/or is being explored in a variety of countries including South Korea, United States, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Brazil, Canada, India, Belize, Puerto Rico and Mexico. Beyond television program delivery, use cases include enhanced public alerting, a complementary PNT (GPS) service known as Broadcast Positioning System (BPS), first responder communications networks, infotainment, software and map updates for connected cars, as well as a host of broadcast IoT applications. Humber's Broadcast-Broadband Convergence B²C Lab is North America’s only industry research lab with a multi-transmitter SFN test bed exploring multi-sectoral applications of ATSC 3.0 and convergence with other global data delivery standards including 5G.

Canada’s first Broadcast-Broadband Convergence B²C Lab to explore NextGen television and data delivery applications.
About us
Humber Polytechnic has established Canada’s first Broadcast-Broadband Convergence B2C Lab to explore NextGen television and data delivery applications enabled by the new Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) 3.0 television broadcast standard. The new 3.0 standard is set to replace North America's current ATSC 1.0 standard. The ATSC 3.0 terrestrial broadcast standard runs on an IP (internet protocol) backbone and can integrate with other global data delivery standards, including Wi-Fi and 5G. It offers enhanced audio and visual features for television, and full broadcast mobility and is currently the world's most efficient one-to-many data delivery system.

Our B²C Lab Research Team recently completed two drone flights to evaluate the over-the-air ATSC 3.0 TV signal quality around the TV antennas on the Barrett Centre for Technology Innovation building. Using a professional TV signal monitor from Avateq Corp., the drone collected and stored data for detailed post-flight analysis in our lab. The team included Hanson Wang, B²C Lab RA and Electronics Engineering Technology student; Georges Livanos, Electronics Engineering Technology Program Coordinator; Joe Markovic, Civil Engineering Technologist and licensed UAV pilot; and Kevin Enedu, Civil Engineering student.
