About us

MISSION Bygone Theatre strives to create and produce historically accurate theatre with classic cinema tropes and aesthetics. We serve Toronto by; producing character driven stories written or set during the early to mid twentieth century; educating students and audience members on our shows and their place in history; providing artists with practical training and advice on how to produce quality period productions as an independent theatre artist. MANDATE Bygone Theatre's goal is to promote the growth and development of independent theatre in Toronto through production, education and outreach. We produce character-driven stories that are written or set in the early to mid twentieth century in an attempt to connect audiences to parts of our past that remain relevant and intriguing today. Through education initiatives such as classroom workshops and student matinees, we connect younger generations to pieces of history they are unlikely to encounter elsewhere, while also fostering youth interest and participation in theatre production. Outreach initiatives connect Bygone with other historically-focused groups in Toronto, further strengthening our city's cultural heritage. Bygone's commitment to accessible theatre is shown through our use of wheelchair accessible venues; our various ticket discounts for disadvantaged, underserved and minority communities; and inclusion of artists of all skill and experience levels both on and off stage, including training positions for those who are new to a role. Bygone Theatre is committed to developing a long-term sustainability plan that incorporates a commitment to diversity, equity and accessibility; social responsibility; and environmental stewardship. It’s World Theatre Day and we want to address an issue facing Toronto artists - the lack of affordable space. We’ve been at The Bridge for about 7 months now, and have prioritized affordable space and paying artists first. But to continue we need your support. Our AD Emily Dix outlines what we have, what we can offer, and what we need to continue to grow and support our community. https://lnkd.in/g9RNiNFz #theaTO #torontotheatre #torontoarts #artistssupportingartists #theatrelife #affordability #officespace

https://lnkd.in/gC9CnFRr Thank you Harness Magazine for taking the time to talk to our AD, Emily Dix, about Bygone Theatre, The Bridge, and the affordability crisis here in Toronto. The cost of space in this city has gotten so ridiculous that even things being rented out at 50% of market rate are totally inaccessible to many people - that needs to change. Artists are one of the lowest income groups and they have so much to contribute to our city, but it’s unfair to expect people to choose between making art and making rent. If you want to live in a city that has culture, beauty, entertainment, then you need to recognize the value artists bring. There are few quick solutions to this, but there is one that is staring us in the face if we acknowledge it: the excess of commercial office space. While turning that into affordable housing is something that will take time, something that can be done immediately is to offer it to artists. Do you know how much space sits unused in our city? Do you know how often people are rennovicted only to have the space sit empty for months or years? We have to say that is not acceptable, not for a city growing as fast as Toronto, with an income gap as wide as it is. Why are we allowing usable space to sit empty so companies can pretend it holds a value it clearly no longer does? The pandemic changed the city and the way we use space. We need to push those with the wealth and power and space to put that back into their own community. To make room for diverse artists to explore and create and help forge a better city. . . . #theaTO #torontotheatre #torontoarts #affordable #affordability #costofliving #379thebridge #torontocommunity #communityarts #artistssupportingartists

Bygone Theatre and UKAI Projects are seeking additional partner tenants to join in building bridges to unknown culture. The Bridge, administered by Bygone Theatre as a charitable interdisciplinary arts hub focused on artistic creation and education alongside our programming partner UKAI Projects, is looking to add forward-thinking, collaborative organizations who are artist-run, arts-adjacent, or arts-supporting. Tenancy is a 20-22 month commitment and comes with a private office space and proportional access to 3500sqft of open shared space, a board room, and other infrastructure. The Bridge is an innovative activation of former commercial office space, responding to two major problems in the city: 19 million sqft of unused office space and a lack of affordable space for art creation, ideation, and prototyping. Each tenant at the Bridge is self-administered. While the ultimate administration falls upon Bygone Theatre, we are creating a collaborative model that requires flat governance, open communication, and shared resources. Qualifications - Interested in supporting or contributing to the creation of art in all its forms and educating artists and arts workers; - Collaborative mindset – interested in sharing ideas and ways of knowing - Not bothered by noise and shared spaces, or willing to utilize noise-cancellation for day-to-day work - Willing and able to commit to the full term, until the end of January 2026 - Able to pay a monthly rental amount of approximately $2500, depending on the amount of space and level of use. Infrastructure at the Bridge - High speed internet thanks to our Connectivity Partner, Beanfield - Office Printer, printing up to 12x18 and with a booklet maker - Technology, including lighting system (usage to be negotiated) and certain software licenses - Opportunity for Shared contribution to AV, recording If this sounds like you, email info@379thebridge.com and let us know what you're looking for so we can discuss further.
