Researching and programming to inform and influence the public health policy from an Indigenous worldview
About us
CAAN is a non-profit organization that leads a collective response to protect the wholistic wellness of First Nation, Inuit and Métis peoples impacted by HIV, hepatitis C and related diseases and issues, such as mental health, addictions and aging. Through research and programming, it informs and influences public health policy from an Indigenous worldview and advances self-determination to address health determinants with Indigenous traditions, values and knowledge. It provides a national forum for members to express needs and concerns, ensures access to HIV and AIDS-related services through advocacy, provides relevant, accurate and up-to-date HIV and AIDS and related disease information, and also plays an international role through its alliance with the International Indigenous Working Group on HIV and AIDS (IIWGHA) and the International Indigenous HIV and AIDS Community (IIHAC).

Today, on World Mental Health Day, we recognize the importance of mental well-being within our Indigenous communities. Our journey towards healing must embrace both traditional cultural practices and modern mental health care to truly support our people. For many, the impacts of colonization, intergenerational trauma, and ongoing systemic inequities continue to affect mental health. But through our resilience, cultural strength, and community support, we can heal together. What We Need: Culturally Safe Mental Health Services that honour our traditions and respect our experiences. Community-led healing initiatives that address trauma while celebrating cultural identity and resilience. Support Without Stigma to create a safe environment for all who need mental health care. Let’s continue to lift each other up, share our stories, and support one another on our paths to well-being. Together, we can create a world where our mental health is valued and protected. #WorldMentalHealthDay #IndigenousWellness #CommunityHealing #MentalHealthAwareness #CulturalStrength #SupportNotStigma #IndigenousResilience #HealingTogether #IndigenousMentalHealth #TraumaInformedCare #CulturalHealing #MentalHealthMatters #HealingSpaces #EndTheStigma #ResilientCommunities #CommunitySupport

For many Indigenous people living with HIV, accessing essential healthcare and support services remains a significant challenge. Despite progress, the unmet needs in our communities are real. Barriers to Care: Lack of culturally safe healthcare environments Limited access to HIV prevention and treatment in remote areas Stigma within and outside the community Insufficient mental health support for those living with HIV What’s Needed: Increased awareness and education to fight stigma Healthcare that respects our cultural values and traditions Better access to testing, treatment, and mental health services for our people Mental health is a crucial aspect of care for Indigenous people living with HIV. The trauma of stigma, isolation, and barriers to culturally appropriate support has a significant impact on mental well-being. According to recent reports, culturally relevant and accessible healthcare—including mental health support—is essential to meet these needs. Addressing structural inequities and enhancing community-led approaches are key to improving outcomes for Indigenous people living with HIV. Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/evGUmCPY Together, we can create an environment where Indigenous people living with HIV receive the support, care, and respect they deserve. Let's amplify our voices for change and advocate for culturally appropriate solutions that truly meet the needs of our communities.

Today marks the 20th anniversary of Sisters in Spirit, a day to honour the lives of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and Two-Spirit people. For two decades, we have come together in solidarity, to mourn the lost, support families, and demand justice for those whose voices were stolen. Let us remember not only their names and stories but also the resilience of the families who carry on the fight. The journey to end the violence against Indigenous communities continues, and we stand united for truth, healing, and change. Join us in lighting a candle, wearing red, or sharing their stories to keep their memories alive. Together, we can make a difference. #SistersInSpirit #MMIWG #NoMoreStolenSisters #20YearsOfRemembrance #JusticeForMMIWG #IndigenousWomen #MissingAndMurdered #EndViolence #RememberTheirNames #SupportFamilies

On Truth and Reconciliation Day, CAAN stands in solidarity with First Peoples across Turtle Island. Today, we remember the injustices faced by Indigenous communities due to colonial policies, including residential schools, while honouring the resilience and strength of First Peoples. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action are vital steps toward healing and justice. This day encourages us all to confront the painful truths of our shared history, reflect on ongoing inequities, and take action for change. Reconciliation is an ongoing journey, and there is still a long path ahead. Advancing the core aspects of the TRC report requires sustained effort and collaboration. At CAAN, we are committed to decolonization and reconciliation, working with partners like the Dr. Peter Centre and the HIV Legal Network to improve health outcomes and address systemic harms impacting First Peoples.
