In 2022, we were awarded a grant from Emissions Reduction Alberta (ERA) as part of their Shovel Ready Challenge to open Canada’s first-ever contaminated soil reuse facility. Contaminated soil is one of Alberta's largest waste streams, and until our facility opened, the most economical disposal option was to transport it to Brooks. While cost-effective, this approach comes at a high environmental cost, resulting in significant greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In 2021, the City of Calgary set an ambitious goal to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. We were thrilled, as our facility aligns with those goals, enabling us to make a substantial contribution to sustainable construction. Since our facility officially opened in the spring of 2023, we’ve accepted contaminated soil, diverting it from landfills and repurposing it into new, valuable products. This has led to a reduction of over 9,000 tons of C02 emissions, equivalent to removing 2,153 cars off the road for a year, significantly supporting the City of Calgary’s environmental initiatives. Small local businesses have been pivotal in this success; their understanding of the value we bring—including our location, backhaul options for clean materials, and commitment to quality—truly sets us apart. Supporting local businesses drives our city’s economy forward, and choosing businesses committed to sustainable practices is vital for our environment. Our gate is open and ready to support Calgary’s environmental and economic goals. #crushedit #washdirt #construction #sustainable #esg #ghg CBC News CBC Government of Alberta https://lnkd.in/gyheVqfR

About us
Calgary Aggregate Recycling Inc. takes materials from construction projects and recycles them into useable gravel, asphalt, and concrete products for construction and landscaping needs. Our team has over 100 years of combined experience working both in service and on the ground of the construction industry. We understand the importance of efficiency on any project. Our yard is equipped with the personnel and equipment necessary to keep trucks working and not waiting! Using recycled material directly impacts the environmental footprint of a construction project. Together with our customers e keep over 250,000 tons of concrete and 120,000 tons of asphalt out of landfills every year. The impact of CAR's 30-year history is astounding, with over 7.5 million tons of concrete and 3.6 million tons of asphalt now repurposed for environmentally conscious construction and landscaping projects. Our yard has: 25mm Recycled Asphalt, 25mm Gravel, 80mm Gravel, 25mm Recycled Concrete, Bank Pit Run, Clean Fill, Recycled Drain Concrete and 80mm Recycled Concrete. We partner with industry on demolitions, road removal, and onsite concrete breakout projects. We hosted a fun lunch and learn for some of our customers yesterday to share our new customer portal. This portal will allow our customers to see their scale tickets and information updated throughout the day. We know that information is key in this industry and we want to make it as easy as possible for you to access it. To learn more, reach out to Michelle Martin. Also we used CAR material to build these beautiful terrariums that we used as centre pieces. Pretty darn cute. Cute is an official construction term. #crushedit #washdirt #yyc #supportlocal #customerservice

We are excited to continue our partnership with Exshaw Lafarge and Geocycle in our shared goal of driving sustainable construction practices. As a local and Indigenous-owned business, we are proud of our role in this initiative. Together we are supporting our local economy, circular economy, and the environment. Thank you to Lafarge Canada and Geocycle for your dedication to developing solutions that align with Canada's #GreenGrowth strategy. #crushedit #washdirt #supportlocal #circulareconomy #collaboration #partnership #esg
The Exshaw Lafarge and Geocycle team announces an extension of their agreement with Calgary Aggregate Recycling (CAR), an Indigenous-owned business, to recycle by-products typically sent to landfill. These by-products are predominantly clay and silt from CAR’s soil washing system, the first of its kind in Alberta. Since 2023, the Exshaw team has successfully recycled these materials as part of the cement manufacturing process. Last year, the team processed approximately 7,000 metric tons, with a 2024 target of more than 35,000 metric tons! “As one of the world's most transformative companies, we embrace the circularity challenge as a central strategic opportunity. We are excited to collaborate with CAR to develop sustainable recycling solutions that contribute to Canada's circular economy in line with our #GreenGrowth strategy,” said Sophie Wu, Head of Geocycle North America. Congratulations to the Exshaw team on this renewed collaboration with Calgary Aggregate Recycling and their contributions to the circular economy!
