About us

WHO WE ARE Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC) is a passionate team of urban placemakers; we are city-builders devoted to making Calgary a better place to live. HISTORY CMLC was incorporated in 2007 as a wholly owned subsidiary of the City of Calgary with the mandate to achieve the City's objectives for urban densification and community renewal, infrastructure investment and placemaking – both within and outside the Rivers District. WHAT WE DO Over the past decade, CMLC has rebuilt East Village from the ground up. Through public infrastructure improvements, strategic placemaking and enthusiastic programming, we have breathed new life into downtown Calgary’s east end. With East Village standing proudly as a testament to our talents in visioning, redevelopment, placemaking, programming and relationship-building, we’ve extended our efforts into the further reaches of the Rivers District. We have now turned our attention to creating a vision for east Victoria Park through the Rivers District Master Plan.

  • Happy Pride, Calgary! Today, our small + mighty team was honoured to walk in the Calgary Pride Parade, celebrating love, diversity, and community. With music from some incredible local artists who have performed in our districts, and rainbow freezies from East Village’s very own Mr. Sun Tea, we proudly marched alongside you. To us, we believe that Trust + Transformation is a together thing, and the spaces we’re building are for everyone. Thanks for having us, Calgary Pride.

  • Join CMLC for Brick by Brick, a series of events where Calgarians can find, celebrate, and commemorate their Olympic Plaza brick before the plaza closes at the end of the year. Brick by Brick kicks off on September 3, with five more event days in the month of September. Our team will be on site to help you locate your brick. • Today, on behalf of our partners at Arts Commons and The City of Calgary, we're excited to share the findings from the recently completed public engagement program for the Olympic Plaza Transformation (OPT) project. A total of 3,100 Calgarians from all four quadrants participated, sharing their desired design features and activities for the transformed plaza. The preferred ideas shared include green space, festivals, cultural events, a skating rink, outdoor eateries and art installations, among others. While the plaza is still in the early stages of design, this valuable feedback will guide the OPT design team as they advance the project with, designs expected to be revealed in early 2025. • Meet our Placemakers - Greg Brandsma, Coordinator, Multimedia Design & Production Greg Brandsma supports the Marketing and Communications team with the design, coordination, and production of brand resources for print, digital, and social media use – from reports, posters and animations to uniforms and large-scale signage. With more than eight years of graphic design experience, Greg’s transition to CMLC followed in the wake of a big lifestyle change – moving from Ontario to Alberta with his wife. Inspired by a desire to be closer to nature and embrace the outdoor culture, he knew that an equally important professional endeavour was to find a role that would creatively challenge him and align his skillset with an ability to serve the broader community. Having experienced the benefits of community revitalization efforts in his Ontario hometown, he recognized the bigger picture driving the work CMLC was leading. “From my experience, there’s so much community good that comes from building places that people want to live in, not just sleep in. And I saw CMLC as a force for community good.” Outside of work, Greg keeps creatively inspired by channeling his focus into building model boats and spending time backcountry hiking and camping with loved ones. • Since 2007, CMLC has been reshaping Calgary into one of the world’s most livable and lovable cities. Community programming has always been a key part of that vision, and Movie on The Rise has been a staple of our community programming, reflecting our dedication to revitalizing urban spaces and then activating them to bring people together. Launched in 2015 alongside the opening of St. Patrick's Island, Movie on The Rise has become a cornerstone event, continuing a tradition that began with outdoor movie screenings projected on the iconic Simmons Building. The inaugural event attracted up to 1,200 attendees, and its popularity endures, with an anticipated attendance of around 500 for this week’s screening of Wonka on August 22. As stewards of the East Village Master Plan, we’re always seeking meaningful partnerships to build connections and enhance the community experience. This year, Movie on The Rise is brought to you in collaboration with local favorites cochu chocolate and carya. Image 1: Movie on The Rise screening of Super Mario Bros. in 2023.
