Canada’s leading charitable conservation organization, taking and inspiring action to sustain wildlife and wild places.

About us

The Calgary Zoo is home to nearly 1,000 creatures across 119 species, and is one of the city’s favourite family destinations. One third of Calgarians visit every year, and more than 97,000 have annual memberships. Operated by the Calgary Zoological Society, a not-for-profit society founded in 1929, the Calgary Zoo is one of just five zoos in Canada accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Our mission is to become Canada’s leader in wildlife conservation. To that aim, we operate a Centre for Conservation Research. Our biologists have earned international recognition in the science of species recovery and reintroduction. Learn about the steps we are taking to inspire change, and set a new path for the future. 🎉 It's National Veterinary Technician Week, and we're ready to celebrate our incredible RVTs! 🥳 Here at the zoo, we are fortunate to have four dedicated Registered Veterinary Technologists (RVTs) on our team. These skilled professionals work tirelessly, both onsite with our animal residents and offsite with those in our conservation programs. In 2023 alone, they supported an impressive 2,961 procedures, conducted 655 radiographs, managed 265 anesthetic events, performed 123 ultrasounds, and still found time to support outreach moments and presentations—all in service of over 100 different species! Their contributions are vital to the field of zoo science. Through their research and compassionate care, they not only improve the lives of the animals in our care but also play a crucial role in sustaining wildlife and wild places, locally and globally. 🩺 To our RVTs, we are so grateful for your passion, hard work, and expertise. Your dedication truly makes a difference! 💚 #YourZooYYC #NationalVeterinaryTechnicianWeek

🌟 We're paws-itively thrilled to share that we have once again received accreditation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ (AZA) independent Accreditation Commission! 🎉 This prestigious distinction, held by only 252 facilities across the U.S. and 12 other countries, underscores our unwavering commitment to enhancing the lives of the animals in our care and inspiring our community to protect wildlife and wild places. Since 1978, we've proudly upheld this “gold standard” accreditation—a true testament to the hard work and passion of our incredible team. To maintain our accreditation, we undergo a thorough evaluation every five years, ensuring we remain at the forefront of animal welfare and conservation. As zoos and aquariums continually evolve, AZA’s rigorous standards are consistently raised. When you visit an AZA-accredited facility, like ours, you can feel confident knowing you’re at a place that prioritizes excellence across all its operations, including animal care and wellbeing, veterinary medicine, wildlife conservation, research, education, finance, and safety. Join us in celebrating this achievement as we continue to strive for a future where people and wildlife thrive together! Learn more: https://bit.ly/3ZBNADY #YourZooYYC
