We unite businesses, government, and NGOs to achieve a #circulareconomy for plastics, so plastics never become waste

About us

Launched in 2021, the Canada Plastics Pact is part of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s growing global Plastics Pact Network and is one of Generate Canada’s Solution Spaces. In partnership with the Smart Prosperity Institute, Generate Canada connects problem-solvers to tackle complex challenges at the heart of environment, economy, and society. By uniting businesses, government, and non-profits, we are working to achieve a circular economy for plastics in Canada. Through an industry-led, cross-value chain, collaborative effort, the CPP will ensure that plastics stay in the economy and out of the environment. Together, we will eliminate the plastic we don’t need and innovate towards new business models, collection systems, materials, and technologies to accelerate the transition to a circular economy. The U.S. Plastics Pact and Canada Plastics Pact hosted our fourth Film & Flex technical workshop to provide practical support to our members in converting to monomaterial structures that comply with the design guidelines! These efforts are an important part of making progress toward Target 1 (eliminating problematic and unnecessary materials) & Target 2 (design compliance) and advancing circularity for film and flexible plastic packaging. Last week’s session focused on refrigerated applications such as meat, dairy, and produce. Converters Amcor, Berry Global, Inc., and ICPG presented on innovative, high-performing monomaterial film and rollstock structures that work in challenging applications. OEM’s Paxiom Group, R.A Jones (Coesia S.p.A.), and Synerlink (Barry-Wehmiller Packaging) shared about work they are doing to help customers overcome machinability challenges in the conversion to monomaterial formats, which was followed by open Q&A from the audience. It will take the full value chain working together to achieve circularity for plastic packaging, and it is exciting to see these companies working hard to support their customers in achieving their circularity goals. Thank you to each of these companies for your leadership in innovating circular solutions and helping brand owners make progress on their design commitments. And thank you to each of our fantastic presenters – Tara cruz, Wesley Porter, Jonathan Cage, Luis Pilonieta, Rich Clifton, and Fabien Jégo – for sharing your knowledge and expertise!

A #Friendlier Future at Niagara College! 🚀 We’re excited to announce that Niagara College is taking its commitment to environmental stewardship to the next level with the launch of the Friendlier program at both the Niagara-on-the-Lake and Welland Campuses this fall! Our blue containers are now a part of the Niagara College community, and while they may match the school's colours, they’re helping the college go green in a big way. 💙🔃 As Dipal Patel, President of Niagara College Student Administrative Council, puts it: "While our school colours might be blue and white… we are so very much green." 🌱 This partnership is a perfect example of how Niagara College is reducing single-use waste and embracing #sustainability across both campuses. A huge thank you to Adam Sheridan, Gray Jackson, Sahil Nagle, Ann Parkes, and all the amazing teams at Niagara College who made this launch possible. 🙌 We can’t wait to see the positive impact as we continue our journey toward a greener future together! 🌍 Thank you to Canada Plastics Pact for supporting this partnership through the Reuse Accelerator Pod. The U.S. Plastics Pact is proud to announce the release of the updated Problematic and Unnecessary Materials Report! The report marks a significant step forward in our commitment to enhancing recycling and composting efforts across the plastics value chain. Initially launched in January 2022 as part of our Roadmap to 2025 strategic plan, this report continues to evolve with the inclusion of new materials and formats, along with a comprehensive "Evaluation List" for future consideration. It aims to streamline recycling processes and improve the quality of recycled content available to manufacturers. As ♻️Jonathan Quinn♻️, the CEO of the U.S. Plastics Pact, rightly stated, "Eliminating problematic and unnecessary materials is foundational to achieving a circular economy. This report lays out a clear pathway to removing barriers and driving advancements in circular package design while enhancing recovery opportunities.” Read the Problematic and Unnecessary Materials Report: https://lnkd.in/dA3Uxme8 #RoadmapToCircularity #CircularEconomy #USPlasticsPact

We are pleased to welcome Copol International Ltd. to the Canada Plastics Pact! Copol International, a custom manufacturer of cast polypropylene films, has been operating for over 30 years in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. With a strong commitment to sustainability, Copol focuses on reducing plastic waste through various initiatives. They are currently advancing their production of mono-material films and compostable biopolymers to support a circular economy for plastics. “We believe that plastics play an important role in our society, especially for food safety, and that they need to be managed properly to ensure they are all reusable, recyclable or compostable. To get there we must all do our part, that is why we are thrilled to have joined the Canada Plastic Pact, where we can be part of the solution. We have recently invested in technology and equipment to develop compostable biopolymers and barrier mono-material films and we look forward to sharing our knowledge and expertise.” Denis Lanoë, P. Eng., VP of Operations and General Manager, Copol International Ltd. - Nous sommes ravis d'accueillir Copol International Ltd. au Canada Plastics Pact.
