A team of plastic surgery residents from McGill University are conducting a survey aimed at assessing the quality of life of patients affected by lymphedema; under the supervision of Dr. Joshua Vorstenbosch and Dr. Anna Towers. The objective of this survey is to gather valuable insights into the physical, mental, emotional, and financial burdens faced by patients with lymphedema. This data will help identify areas needing improvement and develop targeted interventions to enhance overall patient well-being. They aim to better understand the hardships patients endure, to advocate for better provincial healthcare coverage for treatment modalities, and to raise awareness about potentially beneficial emerging surgical interventions. Lymphedema can affect all persons and ages. Lymphedema is a lifelong condition caused by a buildup of lymph fluid. This happens when the lymphatic system is either faulty or damaged and cannot function as normal. It leads to chronic (long-lasting) swelling in the tissues where the lymph flow is blocked. Lymphedema most commonly presents in a limb (arm/hand or leg/foot), but it can also be present in the breast, trunk, genitals, or head and neck. In Canada, an estimated 7,400 Canadians will be diagnosed with head and neck cancer annually. Head and neck lymphedema (HNL) is a significant and commonly neglected side effect, from surgery and/or radiation therapy. HNL could manifest externally (e.g. skin, face, neck, head), internally (e.g. oral cavity, tongue, pharynx) or both. Prevalence of HNL ranges between 12% to 90% for external HNL, and as high as 97% for internal HNL. To learn more about HNL, visit : https://buff.ly/448vBFs to access our Lymphedema Resource Library which features a curated collection of Pathways articles. #canadalymph #lymphedema #lymphedemaawareness #headandneckcancer #HeadAndNeckCancerAwareness #HNLawareness @canadiansocietyotolaryngology

Want to learn more about the surgical management of lymphedema? Dr. Siba Haykal, a Member of the CLF's Board of Directors, and colleagues Valentina Shamoun and Nina Hadzimustafic, have contributed an article titled, “The Current State of Surgical Management of Lymphedema” for publication in the upcoming Summer Issue of Pathways magazine. Imaging for lymphedema plays a key role in diagnosis and management. It allows for visualization of lymphatic vessels. Microsurgical techniques offered include lymphovenous bypass (anastomosis) or LVA and lymph node transplantation. Experienced plastic surgeons can also offer preventative techniques.
