We ensure that Canadian businesses and consumers prosper in a competitive and innovative marketplace
About us
The Competition Bureau, as an independent law enforcement agency, ensures that Canadian businesses and consumers prosper in a competitive and innovative marketplace. Headed by the Commissioner of Competition, the Bureau is responsible for the administration and enforcement of the Competition Act, the Consumer Packaging and Labelling Act, the Textile Labelling Act and the Precious Metals Marking Act. The basic operating assumption of the Competition Bureau is that competition is good for both business and consumers. Competition: • makes the economy work more efficiently; • strengthens businesses' ability to adapt and compete in global markets; • gives small and medium businesses an equitable chance to compete and participate in the economy; • provides consumers with competitive prices, product choices and the information they need to make informed purchasing decisions; and • balances the interests of consumers and producers, wholesalers and retailers, dominant players and minor players, the public interest and the private interest. While students are hitting the books, the Competition Bureau’s hitting the pavement! Last month, we kicked off our latest #recruitment campaign by attending #career fairs at York University, Université de Moncton and Memorial University, Newfoundland and Labrador. As #competition issues make headlines across the country, and with competition policy reform taking place, this is an exciting time to join the Bureau! Shout-out to Bureau participants Sarah Partridge (not pictured), Jacqueline Byers and Sarah Gujarati.

Yesterday, Commissioner Boswell had the pleasure of meeting with Margrethe Vestager, Executive VP of the European Commission, in Ottawa. They were also joined by the new European Union Ambassador to Canada, Geneviève Tuts. The Commissioner took the opportunity to thank the European Commissioner for her global leadership in the protection and promotion of competition, and reflected on her lasting legacy in global competition policy. They also discussed key issues in digital markets and EU-Canada collaboration.
