The Canada Industrial Relations Board’s order is the right one. After a summer of uncertainty, a wind-down of services over the last week and a full stoppage as of Thursday, it’s a relief for businesses and their workers to have certainty that Canada’s rail system is going to be back up and running.

CME welcomes the CIRB order for the resumption of rail services following the Minister of Labour’s direction under Section 107 of the Canada Labour Code. The CIRB decision mandates that the railways and their employees resume their duties by 00:01 EDT on August 26 and continue operations until the final binding arbitration is completed. Months of uncertainty culminating in a wind-down of services and a full rail stoppage has created significant operational and reputational challenges for Canada’s industrial economy. Manufacturers across Canada are relieved that critical rail services are being restored, providing much-needed stability and certainty heading into the fall. This stoppage, along with other recent supply chain disputes and disruptions has underscored the need for systemic change. CME is encouraged the Minister’s recognition of these problems, and we look forward to working with the government to strengthen Canada’s supply chains and ensure the long-term, reliable flow of goods vital to our economy. https://lnkd.in/g2vKsk9M

This week the change leaders of the Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters Training Services team from Newfoundland to Vancouver assembled. We gathered in Manitoba to connect, share and learn to ensure we effectively grow our support for Canadian Manufactures. Our Inaugural CME Facilitators Summit had us sharing industry intel, customer needs, and align on our methods, styles and offerings. We touched on many of our core strengths from; Safety, Lean & Technology, to Supply Chain, Sustainability and Leadership. Of course, we took time to get better acquainted and lean about each other too. Our fresh alignment and innovative ideas aligns perfectly with our National Vision in support of Helping Manufacturers Grow! I truly believe that s our members continue to focus on improvement, collaboration, and support for each other, with help from CME, we will emerge from the productivity crisis Canada is currently in. A national rail shutdown is entirely preventable. While unfortunate that the parties involved have been unable to negotiate a new collective agreement, under Section 107 of the Canada Labour Code, the Minister of Labour can refer the dispute to the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) for final binding arbitration and to prohibit a strike or lockout pending a resolution. Alternatively, the government can reconvene Parliament and introduce back-to-work legislation. A continued rail stoppage will have catastrophic impacts on the Canadian economy, on the public interest and on our reputation on the world stage. CME, and our counterparts at the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, Business Council of Canada and the Canadian Federation of Independent Business have issued a joint statement calling on the federal government intervene to prevent a Canada-wide rail stoppage. We no longer have the option of waiting; the time to act is NOW. This is not about siding with either party; it is about standing up for Canadians. The federal government must show leadership and act before our trains - and with them, our economy - grind to a halt.
