We are deeply saddened by the passing of 2019 Inductee Jim Franklin, a distinguished geoscientist who made monumental contributions to Canada's minerals industry. Jim spent much of his career with the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC), documenting the complex evolution of the Canadian Shield and its link to mineral wealth. A pioneer in developing models and techniques for exploring volcanogenic massive sulphide (VMS) deposits, he also led groundbreaking research on “black smoker” systems to understand how these deposits form. His efforts resulted in numerous new mines and discoveries, significantly advancing the knowledge base of Canada's minerals industry. Beyond his technical contributions, Jim served as a geological consultant, educator, author, lecturer, and industry ambassador. His legacy continues through the countless lives he touched, the stories he shared, and the enduring impact of his work. He will be deeply missed. Read Jim’s obituary here: https://lnkd.in/eA22PKZN

#CMHF Member Spotlight: Jerry Asp. Jerry Asp, a prominent Indigenous leader from Western Canada, has been pivotal in integrating Indigenous Peoples into the mining industry. His journey began in 1965, gaining momentum in the 1980s during the mining boom in BC's "Golden Triangle." As a Tahltan Nation chief, Asp balanced community concerns with the industry's potential to offer employment and business opportunities. In 1985, he founded the Tahltan Nation Development Corporation (TNDC), negotiating groundbreaking Impact Benefit Agreements (IBAs) starting with the Golden Bear mine. TNDC's success in mining and diversification into other sectors dramatically reduced unemployment and empowered the Tahltan community. Jerry's dedication to fostering understanding and collaboration between the mining sector and Indigenous peoples has transcended local boundaries, influencing global practices. His contributions to skills training, economic development, and cross-cultural alliances have earned him several awards, including Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada (PDAC)'s “Skookum Jim Award” and the Indspire Award in Business and Commerce. #CMHF Member Spotlight: Pat Dillon. Patricia Dillon's career in the Canadian mining sector is a testament to visionary leadership and a commitment to positive change. Joining Teck Resources Limited as a geologist in 1979, Dillon's journey is marked by her rise through the ranks, fueled by her exceptional organizational and communication skills. Beyond her corporate achievements, Dillon has been a formidable presence in industry associations such as the Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) and CIM | Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum, advocating for Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) long before it became an industry standard. Her contributions to CSR initiatives, particularly with the Mining Association of Canada's "Towards Sustainable Mining," have been pivotal in shaping a more sustainable and community-aware mining industry. Perhaps her most enduring legacy is the founding of Mining Matters, a charitable organization dedicated to educating youth about Earth sciences and the role of minerals in society.
