Trump has granted a one-month exemption for U.S. automakers from the new tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada, effective March 5, 2025. This move comes after discussions with the leaders of the "Big 3" automakers, amid ongoing concerns that the newly initiated trade war could severely impact domestic manufacturing. CTMA President Louis Jahn has had a hectic day working hard for our CTMA members. Starting with a BDC breakfast meeting with their Chief Economist and CEO representatives from The NARMCO Group, Reko Automation & Machine Tool , Uni-Fab Inc, Cavalier Tool & Manufacturing Ltd, Automotive Parts Manufacturers' Association (APMA), Circle 5 and several BDC representatives. Along with numerous interviews with CTV News, Global News, and CBC Radio Canada. Listed are the main takeaways: 1. From the BDC Economist: Canada to this point has been doing very well, the economy is strong, inflation is in check, interest rates are dropping. The USA has been the same. This tariff will change all that in both countries. Unemployment in the USA is at al all time low which means they have no capacity to take on more work. 2. Companies indicated that customers have stopped rewarding new business for a couple of months. Orders are down 100% and until the tariff situation is settled they expect no new orders. Layoffs are imminent if there are no new orders. OEM programs are on hold. 3. The situation will be resolved one way or another but nobody knows when and what the new "norm" will look like. 4. BDC and EDC are looking for ways to support the industry. As always we will keep you updated as this fluid situation continues.
