  • #ThisWeekInHistory: Flight Officer (FO) Jean Davey was the Canadian military’s first woman Medical Officer. FO Davey was appointed to the medical branch of the RCAF on August 18, 1941, and by 1942 was responsible for the health of the entire RCAF Women’s Division (WD). FO Davey was jointly responsible along with FO Kathleen Oonah Walker (the first commissioned woman officer in the RCAF) in selecting the first 150 members of the Canadian Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (CWAAF), later renamed RCAF Women’s Division in 1942. She also supported recruiting programs, inspected stations around the country, and raised awareness of the importance of excellent medical care in the RCAF Women’s Division.   By the end of the war,14 women Medical Officers had served in the RCAF. The RCAF’s Women’s Division was established in July 1941, followed by the Canadian Women’s Army Corps a month later, and the Women’s Royal Canadian Naval Service a year later. When the Second World War ended in 1945, FO Davey retired from active service but remained involved as a member of the RCAF Supplementary Reserve. In 1951, she helped with the recruitment of women in the RCAF during the Cold War expansion. Dr. Davey also had a successful career in civilian medicine. From 1950 to 1965, she was chief physician of the medical department at Women's College Hospital, a teaching hospital in Toronto. Her contributions as Chief Medical Officer of the RCAF Women’s Division were recognized in 1973 when she was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada for her services to medicine as an educator and administrator.  Dr. Jean Davey died on March 13, 1980. We thank her for her service. #TBT #RCAF100 #CanadaRemembers
