Where Well-Being meets Inclusion & Belonging.
About us
Captains & Poets is a ground-breaking K-12 SEL program that bridges Well-Being and Inclusion & Belonging programming to ignite a sense of self-awareness, connection and agency in the world. The premise of the program is that there is a unique Captain and Poet in each of us that, in partnership, enable us to be our best, most authentic selves. When young people (and adults!) learn about their inner Captain and Poet they have immediate access to their emotions, unique gifts and perspectives, and the complexities of what makes them human. When young people see the value of being their authentic selves, they are better able to embrace others in the same spirit. They become effective self-leaders as they learn how to draw on their innate strengths to contribute to the world around them in more positive ways.

There are days we all feel overwhelmed by what is going on in the world around us. But I believe this is a calling for each of us to learn and grow and access the untapped parts of ourselves to help create a better world. So, when you are having one of those days, remember that deepening our connection to ourselves is a gift to the world in itself, as it naturally deepens our connection to others and magnifies our impact. This isn’t just about young people. #selfawareness and #selfdiscovery is a lifelong journey and it is key to having a positive sense of agency in complex times. Tanya Gerber and her colleague did a brilliant job of capturing our approach to creating positive cultures from WITHIN with Captains & Poets #Champions at the Greater Toronto Hockey League Summit this past weekend. I hope you find something meaningful in their creation to take with you today.

"...EQ levels are at the same low level as 30 years ago! EQ is a soft skill we can learn, and help guarantee our kids' success. That might be a good area to focus on in schools, right? But you'll likely never hear of most of these SEL programs because most schools are blocking them out. They think they have the right programs in place already. We surveyed 96% of students who disagreed with that statement. Something is broken with our system when we have the tools at our disposal to address this mental health epidemic, yet we choose to wait until it's a crisis to address it."
You Think This Can’t Be Your Child? Think Again. This is Maddie and me. I had dozens of these photos taken with her. I didn't keep them all, but now I wish I had. We loved to ham it up together. Both people in this picture had depression. One died by suicide within a year of this picture being taken. Maddie was 14 when she died on April 11th, 2015. God, I miss her. I don't tell you to shock you, but instead to tell you that Maddie was like her picture portrays, at least most of the time. She had a big beaming smile, and she wasn't shy. She was really popular and super kind. She had this raucous laugh that would turn heads in public. She was confident on the outside, but a dark cloud was hovering under the surface, almost undetectable. Parents, if you don't think this could be you in this picture with your son or daughter, give your head a shake. I implore you, as someone who thought the same thing you did, don't be naive! I don't want to read a post five years from now saying,”we didn't see any signs.” Often there are no signs on the surface. Here's the truth: deaths like Maddie's are preventable. I'm not so naive to say we can save everyone, but we can save a lot more than we are today. The challenge is getting ahead of it before it's a problem. That change comes through #Prevention with programs like HowAreYouFeeling and the many other amazing SEL programs developed by some brilliant minds. We need kids to understand their emotions before they're in crisis. When they're in crisis, it's too late. Everyone talks about the importance of #EmotionalIntelligence and that EQ is more revered than IQ in determining success and happiness. But EQ levels are at the same low level as 30 years ago! Something is broken with our system when we have the tools at our disposal to address this mental health epidemic, yet we choose to wait until it's a crisis to address it. Why not just set the schools on fire and send the students back into their classrooms? If you’re as concerned as I am about this mental health crisis, don't sit passively on the sidelines. Let’s ensure every parent, every teacher, and every policymaker knows what’s at stake. We can prevent more deaths like Maddie’s. Please share this with your community—let’s make this personal. #MaddiesStory #PreventTeenSuicide #MakeThisPersonal #MentalHealthCrisis ##SchoolsNeedChange

Educational coach and consultant, Jason Hicks, reflects on the innate connection points between academics and the social and emotional. He wonders about the intersection of various educational models and the natural and often complementary design learning around the whole child. "...when we think about advisory programming, to what degree do teachers see academics and SEL as separate compartments on the proverbial lunch tray?" 🌟 Read You Are What You Teach - Nourishing the Integration of SEL in Teacher Practice by Jason Hicks ➡ https://lnkd.in/gnFG6_TT #UDL #MTSS #IB #SEL #ALT #teachertalk #education #academics #designlearning #coaching #teacher #principal #inclusive
