The rail strike will have substantial impacts on the cement industry.   The Cement Association of Canada has sent a letter calling on the government to consider the broader implications of the rail disruptions on vital industries like cement and concrete.

Completed in 2009, the Golden Ears Bridge is the longest 'extradosed' bridge in North America, with a length of 2,400 m (including access roads). The bridge has six lanes and additional pedestrian and bicycle ways. It is named after the Golden Ears peaks of Mount Blanshard in Golden Ears Provincial Park. Heidelberg Materials delivered over 150,000 cubic metres of concrete for the project.

Why is Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS) included in our #ConcreteZero Action Plan? About 2/3rds of cement emissions come from process emissions, the chemical process needed to convert limestone into clinker. These emission cannot be avoided through fuel substitution or electrifying the manufacturing process. Due to the chemical nature of cement production, CCUS is essential to reaching net-zero by 2050. Our #ConcreteZero Action Plan estimates that by 2050, CCUS will be responsible for 4.4 Megatonnes of CO2 removal per year, or 28% of our industry’s total emissions reductions.

What is carbon uptake? Carbon uptake, also known as recarbonation, is the process of CO2 in the atmosphere reacting with the calcium hydroxide in concrete to form calcium carbonate—a reversal of the chemical process that occurs when making the cement used in concrete. This reduces the whole-life CO2 footprint of cement and concrete. Essentially, concrete naturally sequesters CO2 from the atmosphere, permanently capturing the carbon.
