It was an exciting few days at the ZEBRAFISH DISEASE MODELS SOCIETY Annual Conference in Lisbon, #Portugal. Members of The Berman Lab joined the international zebrafish community to showcase and learn how we can use zebrafish to model and better understand all types of human disease, including childhood cancers and blood disorders.    Representing the CHEO Research Institute and the University of Ottawa at this important conference helps foster international relationships and collaboration, as we promote the study, research and use of zebrafish disease models and share our work and findings with other research leaders. We met so many incredible colleagues and are returning to #Ottawa with renewed inspiration and excitement about the many opportunities for groundbreaking research using zebrafish models.    Congratulations to my team members: Nadine Azzam on her oral presentation, Sarada Ketharnathan on her flash talk and poster presentation, Lissandra Tuzi , Sergey Prykhozhij, PhD, Jennifer Fiene and Kim Kobar for their poster presentations. Yesterday, Alex Munter passed the torch to Dr. Lindy Samson, CHEO’s Interim President and CEO. After 13 incredible years, Alex is embarking on a new journey as CEO of the Canadian Medical Association. Thank you, Alex, for all you’ve done for CHEO, our community, and most importantly, the countless children and families whose lives you’ve impacted. The difference you’ve made will continue to be felt for generations to come. A big thanks to everyone who contributed in making this video and Graham Richardson for narrating. Tuesday is Alex Munter’s last day as the head of eastern Ontario’s children’s hospital after more than a decade on the job.

"Lactation support is unique for each family." RNs and lactation consultants Jennifer Dion and Emma Buist help equip nurses at CHEO to best support breastfeeding mothers. In March 2023, CHEO earned the designation as a Best Practice Spotlight Organization (BPSO) by the Registered Nurses' Association of Ontario (RNAO), after implementing five Best Practice Guidelines, including promoting and supporting breastfeeding from infancy through early childhood. During National Breastfeeding Week (Oct 1-7), CHEO highlighted the importance of this family-centred guideline. À l’occasion de la Semaine mondiale de l’allaitement (du 1er au 7 octobre), le CHEO a souligné l’importance de cette directive axée sur la famille.
