📚✨ Unearthing Hidden Treasures at the Municipal Archives! ✨📚 Get ready for a fascinating journey back in time! We’ve dug deep into the orphaned records at our Municipal Archives and uncovered some incredible gems from the Omemee library's past! 🎉 Imagine this: a ledger book dating back to 1876-1919, filled with names of eager library patrons and the books they borrowed! 📖 But that's not all—we found some loose papers that tell a captivating story: 🗳️ A ballot from the 1886 Omemee Council election—talk about civic engagement! 📅 A peek at the books borrowed in February and March of 1890—what were they reading back then? 📚 A list of new additions to the library from 1914-1915, featuring both fiction and non-fiction. Did you know that the Omemee library began its journey as the Mechanics Institute Library in 1876, right above Laidley Shoe Store? In 1911, it moved to Coronation Hall (over the council chambers), but faced ups and downs until dedicated citizens brought it back to life in 1919. It evolved into an associated library in 1934 and joined the Victoria County Library Co-operative in 1950. 📖❤️ Curious to learn more about our beloved libraries' histories? Check out the full story on the Kawartha Lakes Library page!: https://lnkd.in/gqYxekpP Let’s celebrate the love of reading and the stories that connect us all! What was your favorite book from childhood? Share in the comments! 👇📚💬

🌳🍂 This weekend, as you soak in the stunning fall colors in Kirkfield, take a moment to remember the remarkable Lady Margaret Mackenzie (nee Merry), who played a vital role in shaping our community. Born on June 30, 1850, in Kirkfield , Lady Mackenzie dedicated her life to making Kirkfield a beautiful place. She oversaw the planting of over 600 maples and elms along our streets, giving us the vibrant autumn hues we cherish today. Lady Mackenzie was not just a loving mother of nine; she was a visionary leader who spearheaded community projects, including a hall, a school, and a park. Her passion for community building also led her to oversee the construction of her family home, which became a cornerstone of the Kirkfield community. She also funded the Kirkfield Inn, a beloved local spot, and was deeply involved in her own business endeavors and charitable organizations, not only in Kirkfield but across Ontario and British Columbia. Sadly, Lady Mackenzie passed away on November 29, 1917, but her legacy lives on in the trees that line our streets and in the spirit of community she nurtured. Let’s honor her memory this fall and appreciate the beauty she helped create in Kirkfield! 🍁💚 Read the full story here: https://lnkd.in/gcgGnPam This story is part of our Moments and Memories collection.
