The Port Lands Indigenous Place Naming initiative honours Indigenous cultural heritage and addresses the historical erasure of Indigenous culture, language and presence in the area. Over the last year, the City of Toronto has collaborated closely with Indigenous communities, including Elders and Knowledge Keepers, to ensure the name reflects Indigenous histories, cultures, values, languages and ways of knowing. This name honours the area’s cultural and historical significance to Indigenous communities. This initiative aligns with the City’s Reconciliation Action Plan and commitment to building long-term relationships with Indigenous communities by supporting their leadership and involvement in placekeeping, planning, land and water stewardship, cultural programming and decision-making.
