  • 🚉 Big news for Scarborough! This week, the City of Toronto reached a major milestone for the Eglinton East LRT project, completing the transit and rail project assessment process. Once built, the Eglinton East LRT will include 27 stops, providing better transit access for over 71,000 people, particularly in areas currently underserved by rapid transit. The line will run from Kennedy Station to key destinations like Malvern Town Centre and the University of Toronto Scarborough Campus, while also connecting to other major transit lines such as the GO Train, the future Line 5 Eglinton Crosstown, and Line 2 Subway. This new transit line will offer smoother rides, reduce crowding, and lower emissions, improving connectivity and making it easier for residents to get around. 🌱🏙️

This designation celebrates the City's commitment to plant, grow and maintain trees to benefit the community and we're honoured to be one of 210 communities celebrated for their outstanding dedication to increasing sustainability through their work in urban forestry and providing a leading example for providing green spaces. In 2024, we planted over 130,000 trees and managed 1000 hectares of natural area parkland. Through tree planting, tree protection, maintenance, strategic planning and community engagement, the City strives to achieve its 40% canopy cover target by 2050.

  • Today, as part of the Canada-Toronto Builds program, the federal government has announced $2.55 billion in low-cost financing to unlock 4,831 rental homes, including a minimum 1,075 affordable rental homes. The City is also investing approximately $234.83 million in financial incentives such as relief from development charges, fees and property taxes. 🏗️🏡 The financing, delivered through the Apartment Construction Loan Program (ACLP) and administered by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), responds to requests from Toronto City Council that the federal government provide the City with low-cost loans to support the delivery of a range of affordable and purpose-built rental homes. This partnership means: ➡️ More housing options for renters ➡️ Faster construction of purpose-built rentals ➡️ Lower costs for builders to unlock much-needed homes Collaborating with the federal government supports the City’s goal to create 65,000 rent-controlled, affordable and rent-geared-to-income homes by 2030, of which more than 35,000 are already in the works. Plus, a two-year $25.8 million federal investment through the Unsheltered Homelessness and Encampments Initiative (UHEI) will: ➡️ Expand outreach and shelter services ➡️ Support people transitioning from encampments to housing ➡️ Strengthen partnerships for mental health and addiction services Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gqMDn8qk

  • Are you feeling anxious about a U.S. trade war and the rising cost of living? As part of #TeamCanada, Toronto is responding with a new action plan to support and safeguard our economy in the wake of tariff measures from the United States. This plan was announced today (March 17) by @MayorOliviaChow. The Mayor’s Economic Action Plan in Response to U.S. Tariffs is presented as part of a City of Toronto staff report called: City of Toronto United States Tariff Response: A Strategy to Protect Toronto Businesses, Workers and Residents. The announcement of the plan and our staff report was made at Fire Station 334 to highlight @TorontoFireServices’ Canadian-made fire apparatus and personal protective equipment. This new commitment to prioritize the procurement of what is #MadeInCanada is a key example of how the City is leveraging its purchasing power to strengthen local supply chains. The staff report recommends a comprehensive plan to mitigate the impact of new U.S. tariffs on Toronto businesses, workers and residents. It will be considered by the City’s Executive Committee on March 19, followed by Toronto City Council this month. The report outlines that over the next 30 days, the City would implement 10 actions to support businesses, protect workers and strengthen Toronto’s economy, including: 🍁 Prioritizing Canadian suppliers in City procurement to support local businesses 🍁 Deferring property taxes for industrial properties to provide cashflow relief 🍁 Launching a “Love Local” campaign to encourage residents and businesses to choose Canadian-made goods and services 🍁 Providing dedicated supports and promotional efforts for Toronto’s manufacturing and industrial sector 🍁 Partnering with regional municipalities and the Province to reduce reliance on U.S.-based suppliers 🍁 Expanding global markets for Toronto businesses through industry and export development partnerships 🍁 Increasing procurement opportunities for Indigenous, Black and diverse suppliers and social enterprises 🍁 Helping businesses prepare for economic and technological disruptions related to tariffs 🍁 Directing City staff spending toward Canadian-owned and local businesses. Read the report: https://lnkd.in/gK7N2HQW More to come. We are actively working with the Government of Canada and the Province of Ontario to ensure a unified response to U.S. protectionist policies.
