About us

The City of Grande Prairie provides programs, services, infrastructure and facilities that are the basis for much of the activity in our community. Grande Prairie is the youngest city in Canada with a median age of 30.3 and one of the fastest growing communities in North America. The 2016 federal census recorded 63,166 residents up 13.5% from 2011. Whether it is parents pushing a stroller, children filling the Eastlink Centre or families biking one of the many trails, there are signs of youth everywhere you turn. Grande Prairie’s youthfulness is a result of the growing opportunities presented by its role as a regional hub as well as the area’s many natural resources.

  • The City of Grande Prairie proudly took home the Sports Tourism Canada Canadian Sport Event of the Year Award – Group B for the National Aboriginal Hockey Championships (NAHC) at the Prestige Sport Tourism Awards this morning in Calgary. This award recognizes the overall success of an outstanding single-sport, multi-sport or collegiate event held in Canada in 2024, and was accepted by City staff Katie Biberdorf and Chenoa Esau. Grande Prairie is the first Alberta city to host the NAHC which serves as the premier competition for young indigenous hockey players in Canada, and brought in 350 players, 80 coaching staff and nearly 6,000 spectators for 46 games. We were proud to provide free admission to all games and supplementary events, host nine Indigenous vendors, feature Cree play-by-play commentary and include a smudging teepee with an Elder for participants and spectators.
