Protecting our Coast. Building our Economy.
About us
The Coastal First Nations-Great Bear Initiative is an alliance of nine First Nations along BC’s North and Central Coasts and Haida Gwaii. They include the Council of the Haida Nation, Skidegate, Old Massett, Metlakatla, Heiltsuk, Nuxalk, Gitga’at, Kitasoo/Xai’xais, and Wuikinuxv First Nations. Although each Nation has its own distinct territory, governance and culture, our territories are all found within the Great Bear Rainforest—one of the largest temperate coastal rainforest systems on Earth. After decades of industrial logging and over-fishing, we collectively vowed to create a new conservation-based economy in our territories. We promote community self-sufficiency and a sustainable approach to economic development that recognizes our Title and Rights and protects our culture and ecosystems.

The Honourable Murray Sinclair played a fundamental role in shaping the course of Truth and Reconciliation in this country. As an Indigenous person, Sinclair embodied the values of our communities and changed the way the world understood residential schools and their impact on our lives as Indigenous people in Canada. CFN extends its deepest gratitude for Sinclair’s commitment, generosity, and unwavering support for Indigenous people across the country, and our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, and colleagues. We know his work will continue to resonate for generations to come. Image: Archkris, via Wikimedia Commons

Heiltsuk youth aged 12 to 15 and community members teamed up with partner organizations to remove up to 5,000 pounds of marine debris — fishing gear, nets, rope, polystyrene floats, plastic bottles, and more from their beaches. Heiltsuk Hereditary Chief λáλíyasila Frank Brown, a mariner all his life, says his people have lived and died on the water and always understood the ocean as a sacred and vulnerable place. "The ocean is a sacred place between the land and the sky, and if we hold it as sacred, we will revere, honour and respect it. The ocean covers 80 percent of the planet, it stabilizes our atmosphere, the air we breathe, it’s the biggest carbon sink on the globe. Our people have always known and always said — ‘everything is connected’ — and it’s not just a philosophical notion — it’s based on a deep and profound understanding of the interconnectedness of life and our interdependency.” https://lnkd.in/gATvE_eF
