Our President, Sarah Patterson, is a strong advocate for the transformative power of storytelling and its role in shaping both individuals and communities. As an avid reader deeply engaged with the themes we cover in our courses, she has curated a list of 32 thought-provoking books to guide us toward the post-carbon caring society. What books would you add to this list? https://lnkd.in/egY8-kEm

The community for a post-carbon caring society.
About us
Common Earth is combatting climate change with a unique and comprehensive learning program. The program equips those concerned about the climate crisis with a profound and strategic understanding of how to create successful environmental interventions. Mission Possible The earth's temperature is rising. Humans are rapidly destroying the environment that sustains them in countless ways. The obscene inequality in distribution of wealth and innumerable other social inequities are growing. Structural racism seems to be ineradicable. People care about these issues but struggle to know what to do. For Common Earth, there are no obvious answers or easy solutions. Instead, we provide a holistic understanding of the various forces involved and help participants shift their thinking from hopelessness to possibility. We are building a community of people with this new perspective. Together this community can overcome the barriers and share in the emerging caring society that puts carbon in its place. Principles Common Earth looks for basic principles. They govern the entire universe. Gravity, electricity, and ecosystems are all governed by basic principles. There are even principles of how we experience life. When one understands a fundamental principle, effective action becomes possible. When you encounter a new principle, you see the bigger picture and new possibilities present themselves. It is easy to see this strategy in action. When the Wright Brothers understood Bernoulli's Principle, the possibility of fixed-wing flight emerged. So teaching basic principles is what Common Earth is all about. In-depth understandings of principles shift thinking and promote motivation to take effective action. A community of people armed with this deeper understanding of how the world works will be unstoppable. Changing our thinking changes the world we create.

I recently wrote an article about how Common Earth integrates learning strategies from the natural world in our courses:
#biomimicry is an exciting part of our course. Participants are consistently fascinated by the wisdom of nature and how we can draw inspiration from everything it accomplishes. Not only is this a key theme in our course, but we also integrate strategies inspired by the natural world to enhance learning. Debra Weinstein has recently discussed the presence of these strategies in our courses in this article. #climatecrisis #inspiredbynature #biomimicry #climateaction #systemsthinking #climateanxiety

I love what we are doing here at Common Earth to fight the climate crisis! Through our course, we have reached people in 40 different countries, from all walks of life, empowering them with tools to move from hopelessness to hopefulness. I'm proud to say that many of them are here in this network. A complex issue such as the climate crisis, requires a systemic understanding so we can act where we can get the highest leverage. Now, with two courses, we continue welcoming people who have more time available to go deeper into themes, while also welcoming people who can only dedicate a few hours a week to expand their understanding of our current situation. It's imperative that we understand how we all contribute to the climate crisis, and how we can all be change-makers towards a better future. #commonearth #sustainability #climatecrisis #climateaction #systemsthinking #climateanxiety #thermodynamics #energy #economics #biomimicry #regenerativeagriculture
We are excited to launch our course offer for September 2024! This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in deepening their understanding of the climate crisis and in leveraging their actions towards a caring society. Sarah Patterson, president of Common Earth, had the honour of addressing participants of the 2024 Environmental Studies Association of Canada (ESAC) conference. In an inspiring presentation, she shared a new and necessary story on the climate crisis. We thank ESAC and Kira Jade Cooper for the invitation and collaboration through the organization of Sarah's participation. The Environmental Studies Association of Canada (ESAC) is thrilled to host the amazing Sarah Patterson, President of Common Earth at our 2024 conference. In her engaging address, Sarah outlines a more holistic explanation of the climate crisis. As she explains, "Often understood as an energy crisis, the issues we are currently facing are in fact more existential than anything else. And seen from this perspective, climate change can be reimagined as an opportunity for us to shift our narrative and tell a more hopeful story of who we are and how we can once again live in reciprocity with the rest of our amazing planet." Sarah's talk is available on-demand: https://lnkd.in/gkCuvqSY More information about Common Earth can be found here: https://lnkd.in/gpBT7kJq On behalf of ESAC and our partners at One Resilient Earth, York University's Faculty of Environmental and Urban Change, and the Centre for Climate, Psychology and Change, we offer our deepest thanks to Sarah for this exceptional contribution. On a personal level, I'd like to add a big thank you! It has been so much fun collaborating with you, I can't wait to see what emerges next! ESAC is Canada’s leading scholarly community of environmental researchers and educators. For over 30 years, ESAC has collaborated with members from the academic communities, government, non-government, and NGO sectors to enhance prospects towards collective and long-term flourishing. Each year, ESAC participates in the Congress of the Federation of Humanities and Social Sciences. Congress is the largest academic gathering in Canada and one of the largest gathering of academics in the world. This year’s theme — Sustaining Shared Futures — addresses the critical need to recognise and respond to the interconnected social, economic, environmental, and technological threats of our time. #climatechange #climateanxiety #earth #commonearth #metacrisis
