About us
Hello! We are Compulsion Games, an independent video game developer based in Montreal, Canada. Our office, previously located in Saint Henri, is now located in Westmount. Our team is made up of passionate, excited people with varying levels of experience, ranging from very senior to very junior, but we all share a passion for video games and a desire to create amazing work. We're now approximately 90 employees strong and are looking to expand with the right people. We opened our doors in 2009, with a focus on creating new intellectual properties for PC and console using Unreal Engine. Our first game, Contrast, launched on PC, PS3, Xbox 360 and PS4 in November 2013 and on Xbox One in May 2014. Contrast tells the story of a little girl and her imaginary friend, set in an adult world of film noir, cabaret and gangsters-and we're damn proud of it, too. We shipped our second project, We Happy Few, in August 2018. We Happy Few is set in a retrofuturistic 1960s England, filled with paranoid citizens and dystopic euphoria. 2018 was also the same year we joined the Xbox family and are now officially a Microsoft studio! Currently, we are working on our new IP, South of Midnight, a third person action-adventure game set in the American Deep South. South of Midnight tells a dark modern folktale and is driven by a rich narrative, unique art direction, and thematic gameplay elements.

You've heard us talk a lot about Compulsion Games. 📣 And for very good reason, too. This partnership has been #career and company defining for the majority of us at Studiotypes over the last 5 years. The partner of dreams, you might say. 🖤 In our first of hopefully many more #casestudy posts we intend to share, we feel it's important to dive into the highlights, achievements and even the data of what value we've been able to add to #gamedevelopment studios when we get the opportunity. Talking about #jobs is pretty easy. Being able to share the challenges we overcame and the impact we made is where it counts. 💪 Our humble beginnings with Compulsion began with ad-hoc email exchanges and sharing speculative talent with Guillaume back when they were mid way through dev on We Happy Few, and still an #indiedev. We clicked, our relationship began to blossom, and shortly after shipping their 2nd game to a very warm reception, Xbox Game Studios Publishing came along and announced they were acquiring the studio. 💥 A number of hires later, Michael Elliott Chan, CHRP CRHA joined the fold and with a growth plan in place to get the studio to 90 people, we got to work. How can we sum up some of the best bits? ✅ #CoopMode started with Compulsion Games, and is still going 3.5 years in ✅ We've hired over 80 people in just over 5 years, with 63 people since in coop ✅ We visited Montreal for the first time in 2023, finally meeting folks in the flesh ✅ Besides headcount growth, we continue to support the People/HR needs ✅ 'South of Midnight' has so far won two Clio awards, and is one of Xbox's most anticipated upcoming releases... We want to say thank you again to Michael, Guillaume Provost, Delilah Robinson, Geneviève Forget, Whitney Clayton and all of the wonderful people at Compulsion Games (too many to tag here) for the support, trust and belief in our work over the years.
