KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER: It's not secret the #constructionindustry is way behind the eight ball when it comes to the knowledge transfer of the veterans onto the existing and up and coming workforce. Quite frankly, it's also a crying shame that nothing is being done about it. That's until we stepped onto the scene. The Constructors Guild™ is committed to bringing these types of changes to our industry. But we can't do it alone. We need individuals that see it like we do, and have been thinking of doing some or all of what we seek to accomplish. Individuals that may have been on the sidelines thinking they were alone in their thoughts. Individuals that once they see that they aren't alone with these concerns, will ramp things up, and go all in on instilling change and hope for an industry that is starving for it. COMMUNITY IN CONSTRUCTION: I believe in an organic network made of like-minded individuals who seek better for themselves. I instill this notion in my organization the Constructors Guild™. We crowd-source the geniuses, and then open source the genius. A holistic community of people that work together. Not necessarily all towards the same goal. But unquestionably made of people looking out for each other. And that’s a powerful transformation of how we view our industry and the world. We’ve realized that we’re not in competition. That we can benefit from all the things that you would typically get from being in competition with each other. We inspire each other which encourages us to work harder and raise our levels. We work in collaboration and are a tribe which is beneficial to everyone including witnessing your fellow members do well. Without this community, our industry has us riddled and conditioned to compete with each other including for the same type of work. By virtue of having created this community for those who build them, we’ve empowered our members to embrace being valuable assets. Our community grows with each member. The more of us doing the work, the better the creativity, influence, excitement, and inspiration. The better everyone will get. The better their careers or businesses will become. The better the competition they will bring to our industry. And, the better the #constructionindustry will [finally] become. Ours is a growth mindset. It’s high quality leadership. It’s also a collaborative process. It’s about becoming better at what we want to do. Together. This vision is one that I have held onto for decades. Patiently honing my skills. Making note of others’ mistakes including mine. Grasping to every lesson learned. Building my network. Nurturing every relationship. And now transferring all of that into the Constructors Guild™. This past Thursday I was in attendance at the Constructors Guild™ Moai Dinner. This past dinner was enlightening simply to the fact of hearing from a younger generation coming up within the industry. There were a diversity in attendance with an equal balance of men and women. The topic was Mental Health and Wellness. I know some industry people will not want to discuss this. However it is an issue in our industry. My take away from this dinner was; we focus on the mental health of those in the office but we are not paying attention to the people in the field. With my past experience working in the field, I know it will be difficult to introduce and change the site environment. If we don't put forth the measure to make sites a more collaborative and less self serving work place, things will not change. If we are going to entice more people to join our industry as trades, we need to take measures to ensure the well being and mental health of our sites are just as stable (more so) than our office. Last night, I had an eye-opening conversation with nine like-minded individuals about the housing crisis. It's become abundantly clear that our three levels of government are not going to solve the issue. Who will? We, the Construction Professionals, have built our careers around solving problems every day. So, what's the solution? Fix the approvals process and the financial burdens, such as taxation, and let construction do what we do best - BUILD. We owe it to future generations to leave things better than they currently are. It's important to remember that we elect officials to represent our wants and needs. It's time to speak up and have our voices heard when decisions are being made that don't benefit us as a whole.
