  • At Cornerstone Timberframes, we believe in making smart choices for a sustainable future through mass timber construction. ❓ Did you know that mass timber stands out for its significantly lower embodied energy than traditional materials like concrete and steel? What does this matter? First, what is embodied energy? This term refers to the total energy consumed throughout a material’s life cycle—from extraction and processing to transportation and disposal. The embodied energy levels of building materials directly impact their environmental footprint. ⭐️ Mass Timber's Advantage: Studies reveal that mass timber can have embodied energy values that are approximately 50% to 80% lower than concrete and steel, significantly reducing the energy required in construction. 🍃 Energy-Efficient Production: The production of concrete is energy-intensive, with cement manufacturing accounting for about 8% of global CO2 emissions. Contrastingly, timber processing requires much less energy, especially when sourced locally. 🚘 Transportation Benefits: Being lighter than concrete and steel, timber leads to lower fuel costs and reduced emissions during transport, making a positive impact on the overall lifecycle of construction materials. ♻️ Recycling and Reuse: At the end of its life, mass timber can be effectively reused or recycled, while concrete can pose challenges in recycling. By choosing mass timber, we can dramatically reduce embodied energy in our buildings, paving the way for a greener tomorrow.

  • This frigid day has us dreaming of this charming cottage located on a unique lakefront lot within Riding Mountain National Park. The area's exceptional beauty is protected by specific regulations that limit construction to the renovation of existing cottages. Redevelopment of the cottage can include complete rebuilds, but it must remain entirely within the existing building footprint and comply with restrictions on height and hard surfaces. Additionally, exterior materials are restricted to those historically used in early park buildings. Fortunately, the use of timber details is encouraged!
