In a divided ideological landscape where each “side” promises group membership, it almost certainly comes at the cost of the ability to criticize the movement that offers us belonging. What I notice is that large topics like c*vid, climate, vacc*nes, politics, wars… the main held narrative pushed by media outlets preaches righteously that holding *this* belief is what “good” people do. There’s a lot of preaching of openness and love, yet any criticism of that perspective is met with shame, cancelling, and the attempt to exile the dissenting member. This is not how a community acts. This is how a cult behaves. What ends up happening is that we have two ideological extremes that present as if they are the only choices… but they’re not. When we remain silent about our perspectives, we cancel nuance. We delete the bridge that always needs to exist between extremes. And when we stop challenging aggressively protected perspectives, dumb ideas proliferate. I say all of this because silence creates the illusion that we have no other choice and that we must be crazy because we think we’re the only one thinking what we’re thinking (insert anxiety!). However, using our voice lowers the perceived social risk for others to raise their voice too. Essentially, you being courageous and speaking up makes other people courageous too. The greatest act of rebellion begins with one brave being willing to lose everything to gain themselves.
