For the next few days CropLife Canada will be at #COP16 with over 190 countries and multiple other stakeholders. This is the leading global forum for #biodiversity policy discussions. I will be proudly representing Canada 🇨🇦 and its agricultural life sciences sector as part of the Official Delegation at #COP16. There are many discussions and negotiations ahead of us before we can reach a successful outcome. To get there, we need to remain science and evidence based and acknowledge the critical role that plant science innovations play in #conservation, managing invasive species, food production, food security, #sustainability, and livelihoods. Exciting advancements from McGill University's Department of Plant Science! Researchers at McGill University have discovered a way to use genetic engineering to boost the nutritional profile of oats by increasing their oleic acid content. Oleic acid is known for its heart-health benefits and potential to lower the risk of diabetes. This gives oats, which are already known for their high fibre content, a more comprehensive nutritional package. “These findings pave the way for developing oat and other grain crop varieties with superior nutritional value, tailored to address specific health concerns," explained Dr. Jaswinder Singh, Associate Professor in the Department of Plant Science, who led the study. The 2024 meeting of the North American Trilateral Technical Working Group (NAT TWG) on Pesticides just wrapped up in Mexico City. Thanks to our wonderful hosts #PROCCYT for putting on a productive event bringing together industry leaders and regulators from Canada, the United States, and Mexico to discuss key issues impacting pesticide regulation and trade across North America. While there are challenges ahead there are also opportunities that with some elbow grease and sustained engagement can keep moving us towards more harmonized and efficient regulatory frameworks that benefit farmers, consumers, and the environment.
