Did you know that a single vehicle travelling one mile of unpaved road once a day for a year can deposit one ton of dust along a corridor extending 500 feet on either side of the road? Road dust is not just a nuisance; it poses significant safety hazards due to reduced visibility for drivers. Moreover, it can lead to various health issues. When inhaled, dust particles can irritate the lungs and worsen existing respiratory conditions like asthma and bronchitis. Certain dust types, such as silica dust, can even result in severe lung diseases like silicosis. Long-term exposure to road dust is also linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and other serious health problems. Last month, our team travelled to #LasVegas to attend the 2024 #MINExpo. Apart from connecting with new and familiar faces, we also had the chance to see these massive new haul truck models in person! No matter how long we have worked in mining, the sheer size of these mine haul trucks still amazes and fascinates us! Mining haul trucks have been known to be as tall as 51 ft and weigh as much as 687 metric tons or 1.5 million pounds! (See pictures of John and Teaghan next to these haul trucks for size comparison) And yet… we build roads that can not only support this weight but also withstand heavy traffic, despite weather conditions. 5 million tons. That is the amount of road salt used per year across Canada. Once these salts enter the ecosystem, they are notoriously difficult to remove, eventually making their way into our lakes, rivers, and groundwater. A recent study from Queens University revealed alarming chloride levels in some urban areas, some reaching as high as 18,000 mg/L which far exceeds safe thresholds for aquatic life. This chloride pollution doesn’t just harm fish and amphibians – it disrupts entire ecosystems, leaving only the hardiest species to survive.
