In S&OP, achieving balance between supply and demand is key to operational success. Yet, this balance isn’t just about making educated guesses, it's about setting actionable, accountable plans. That’s why we use a demand plan instead of a demand forecast. A forecast is what we expect might happen, a plan is something we actively want to happen. The demand plan holds teams accountable across three essential components: Booking Plan: Incoming orders. Unconstrained Shipment Plan: Shipments the market demands. Backlog Plan: Open orders impacting lead times. When we break down demand into distinct streams, we’re not just organizing data, we’re unlocking new insights. This approach allows us to address each stream’s unique challenges and needs, leading to smarter decision making. By planning around these demand patterns, we can better anticipate shifts, prioritize resources, and drive greater alignment across teams. Want to elevate your approach to demand planning? Is your S&OP process delivering the returns you expect? If you're in supply chain or operations, you’ve likely heard about Sales & Operations Planning (S&OP). But are you aware of the quantifiable hard benefits it can bring, like improving service levels, cutting lead times, reducing excess inventory, and more? S&OP isn’t just about better meetings or communication, it's about delivering measurable results in sales, logistics, and operations. Here are the key benefits of S&OP: 1️) Demand predictability: S&OP creates accountability and uses segmentation to improve demand forecasting. The result? A clearer view of demand challenges and more accurate forecasts. 2️) Supply predictability: By setting and measuring supply plans within defined constraints, S&OP ensures better alignment and drives improvements through accountability. 3️) Buffer planning: Formalizing lead times, inventory, and flexibility allows for more coordinated decisions to manage the gap between supply and demand effectively. What results have you seen from S&OP in your organization? Let’s discuss more in the comments! #SupplyChain #SOP #Operations
