Exciting progress from Scandinavian Ocean Minerals - they're heading out on a research cruise on October 7th to gather data on polymetallic nodules

Enormous areas of land are impacted by terrestrial mining ⛏ 👨🚒 Satellite imagery indicates that 101,583 km² of the world's surface is mined However, around 1million km² of land is impacted by mining. That's 0.67% of the world's land area, or around a third more than total urban areas worldwide Land use and impacts include overburden storage, tailings, tailings ponds, and other associated land use It's important to understand the current impact of terrestrial mining in the debate around deep-sea mining https://lnkd.in/gwPyHzA3 #criticalminerals #deepseamining #mining #energytransition

The team at Green Minerals wrote a tremendous article about global demand for Copper, particularly: - Copper demand is growing rapidly 📈 - Meeting this demand is barely achievable 🤷♀️ - Copper exploration has yielded few finds 🔍 - Recycling rates sit stubbornly around 40% ♻ - Copper is critical The Norwegian EEZ is estimated to contain 38million tons of Copper, per Norwegian Offshore Directorate estimates Deep-sea mining in Norway will help fill this enormous gap https://lnkd.in/gbi3CRs9 #deepseamining #criticalminerals #coppercrunch #energytransition

Fascinating scenario modelling from the Norwegian Offshore Directorate: - "High" Scenario - 50% drop in oil production by 2050 - "Base" Scenario - 70% drop - "Low" Scenario - No oil & gas industry left by 2050 Norway has tremendous offshore expertise, combined with vast subsea mineral resources. There's a great opportunity here to pivot from producing oil to mining minerals for the energy transition
By 2050, the Norwegian oil industry could be gone The Norwegian Offshore Directorate recently published their 2050 outlook. Let’s have a look at their three scenarios for the Norwegian Oil and Gas industry. In the High scenario, the industry ramps up exploration and are able to make several new large discoveries. We fast track developments in the Barents Sea, and connect new gas pipelines. In this scenario, Norwegian oil and gas production will be around 50% lower in 2050 than today. Yes, you read that right. The *high* scenario says we will *halve* production. In the Base scenario, it’s kind of business as usual, with some exploration but no new large discoveries. Production drops by almost 70% by 2050. The we have the Low scenario, where exploration stops, and we do not find any new barrels. In this scenario, there won’t be an oil and gas industry left by 2050. Three quite different visions for the future. All three scenarios are in line with the Paris agreement, says the directorate. The economic difference between them equals almost the value of the entire Norwegian Sovereign Wealth Fund. Norway struck oil 55 years ago. In 26 years, an industry that has transformed a country could be gone. So it’s clear we have some important choice to make. I believe the right thing is to continue to develop our industry. At the same time, we need to show we can rise to the challenges of a Net Zero future, and be part of the solution. Let’s not bet on the future. But build it.
