On May 6, 2024, a research proposal from a national team including UM and DFM Drs. Alex Singer, Alan Katz, Sarvesh Logsetty, Rae Spiwak, and Amanda Condon received an $18.9 million grant from Canada Biomedical Research Fund (CBRF). The research, titled PREPARED (Pandemic Preparedness Engaging Primary Care and Emergency Departments) will create a new approach to pandemic preparedness that will improve the monitoring and early detection of pathogens while accelerating the development of vaccines, treatments and diagnostics. Please join us in congratulating Zheng Ming Xi on his new appointment as the Director of the International Medical Graduate (IMG) program in the Department of Family Medicine, effective May 1, 2024. Dr. Xi brings with him extensive experience in the IMG program, having served as the IMG Training Program Director since 2019. “I most look forward to leading the IMG program and collaborating with various stakeholders to improve primary care access for Manitobans who are in need of family physicians,” says Dr. Xi. A graduate of the University of Toronto (Hons. BSc. Neuroscience) and the Saba University School of Medicine (MD), Dr. Xi completed his family medicine residency at the University of Manitoba in the Northern Remote program. He currently serves the Winnipeg region as a family physician for Ongomiizwin Health Centre, a family physician and preceptor at the Aboriginal Health and Wellness Centre, and a consulting physician and preceptor in addictions medicine at the Health Sciences Centre.
