It’s time to spotlight another winner at the annual DIVERSEcity Awards of Impact! The Empowering Employer Award, sponsored by Fortis BC, recognizes an employer that supports and empowers its staff and the community to be inclusive and the winner was Coast Capital Savings! Tanya Smith, Senior Manager, Social Purpose Ecosystems, at Surrey-based Coast Capital, accepted the award on behalf of the credit union. She spoke passionately about the transformative partnership between Coast Capital and DIVERSEcity, particularly the profound impact of the Coast Capital Credentialing Program for Newcomer Women in the labour market. “You [at DIVERSEcity] have created a space for things like this program to come to life, [which can’t happen] without leadership that allows the space for new ideas to come to life. How this program came to life, I have to go back to the very beginning and honour this moment because we have been a partner of DIVERSEcity for many, many years, and when they sat down and told me the stories of some of the newcomer women that really struck my heart, I said, ‘What can we do? How can we work together to create something new?’ Thank you to Fortis BC for sponsoring the award and to Fortis representative Kim Halowski for presenting it! The annual DIVERSEcity Awards of Impact is about celebrating and uplifting diverse changemakers working to create a more equitable and sustainable world. This year, we presented awards to recipients in 10 award categories. Over the next few weeks, we will spotlight each of the inspiring winners to recognize their achievements and amplify their message! First up is the Hon. Bruce Ralston, KC winner of the Community Changemaker Award. To a standing ovation, he walked to the stage, as his long list of achievements was described. A lawyer by profession, Mr. Ralston served as a councillor on Surrey City Council from 1988 to 1993, where he advocated for planned development for healthy neighbourhoods for Surrey families. Elected as the MLA for Surrey-Whalley in 2005, he has had a consistent focus on creating positive change and improving the lives of underserved populations through sustainable development, economic innovation and community empowerment, serving as Minister of Forests, Minister responsible for the Consular Corps and more! “Surrey — and the communities we serve — is the future of British Columbia and it’s not much of a reach to say it’s the future of Canada. It’s the fastest-growing city in our province and we are engaged in profound change as we welcome newcomers and their families seeking to establish themselves here. The work that you do is invaluable and I’m proud to say that I played a part in the unfolding of that particular story.” he shared. Thank you to TD for sponsoring the award and thank you to TD representative SARB JOHAL who presented the award! DIVERSEcity offices are closed today, September 30, in recognition of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Truth and reconciliation is an important value for us at DIVERSEcity. We are committed to truth and reconciliation, ensuring equitable access to opportunities for all and fostering meaningful relationships with Indigenous partners. Last week, we were honoured to share a message of hope and reconciliation from Naomi Black and Darryl Bolton of the Wild Moccasin Dancers, who performed at our DIVERSEcity Awards of Impact. They believe that by sharing what has been gifted to each of us, we strengthen the gifts within all of us. And, regardless of race, gender, religion, age or ability, there is enough space for all of us. Taking opportunities like this to embed Indigenous knowledge and perspectives into our work is important, as is sharing this understanding with the people we serve, who may not be aware of the history and modern realities of Indigenous Peoples of Canada and the devastating impact of residential schools. Let’s take time today to reflect, learn and honour the Indigenous Peoples who have lived on these lands since time immemorial. #NationalDayforTruthandReconciliation #NDTR #TruthAndReconciliation #OrangeShirtDay #EveryChildMatters
