When food (even packaged food) ends up in the landfill it releases harmful methane gas, which is a key contributor to climate change. Luckily, Nova Scotia has excellent composting programs that turn our food scraps and other organics into valuable resources. Think before you throw. In 2023, Divert NS conducted a province-wide landfill audit to better understand the waste in Nova Scotia’s landfills. The waste audit report is now available to download and shows that over half of what's in Nova Scotia's landfills could have been recycled or composted in most municipalities. The results from the waste audit enable Divert NS and the waste management sector to develop targeted waste reduction strategies and identify opportunities for resource recovery.
