Congrats to Halifax family physician Dr. Ajantha Jayabarathan (Dr. AJ) and physiotherapist Laura Lundquist of Zoomer’s Physiotherapy on the provincial launch of Get Up and Go Nova Scotia. A collaboration between these two health-care providers, the program is helping people improve their health and manage chronic conditions by making Nordic walking part of their routine. With funding from Doctors Nova Scotia’s Section of Family Doctors Council, the Get Up and Go pilot program saw Halifax family doctors prescribing free specialized walking poles and working with a local physiotherapy team to provide assessment, training and guidance for their use. Get Up and Go Nova Scotia will expand the program across the province, with more family doctors and primary care providers invited to participate. Engaging evening as the Dalhousie University Department of Psychiatry held a welcome reception for six Dalhousie University International Fellows from Ghana and the Middle East. Inspired by the need to use education and international cooperation to close psychiatric treatment gaps at home in Nova Scotia and for individuals and communities abroad, our department launched it’s flagship International Fellowship Program last year. The International Fellows work in Nova Scotia Health Authority and IWK Health clinical programs, contributing to patient care whilst training and gaining new clinical skills with which they would set up new specialized services in their home countries after their training in Nova Scotia.
