  • It’s official! The Bank of Canada announced a 50 basis point rate cut, the largest since March 2020. The new benchmark rate is now 3.75%, offering much-needed relief in a cooling economy. According to Dominion Lending Centres chief economist, Dr. Sherry Cooper, this move was expected as inflation has dropped below 2% and the current rates have been too restrictive for the Canadian economy to thrive. Dr Cooper mentioned that the Canadian economy “can’t survive interest rates at current levels” and predicted that the Bank would go the full 50 basis points. With inflation at 1.6% and signs of a sluggish labour market, this cut was the right move to help boost economic activity. For consumers, this rate cut brings a big opportunity. Homeowners may see lower mortgage payments, and those looking to enter the market could benefit from improved affordability. With borrowing costs easing, this could be the break many first-time homebuyers have been waiting for. If you're thinking about refinancing or getting into the market, now could be a great time to explore your options. With another rate decision coming in December, there’s potential for even more favourable conditions ahead!
