The Downie Wenjack Fund aims to create a path towards reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people.
About us
Inspired by Chanie’s story and Gord’s call to build a better Canada, the Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund (DWF) aims to build cultural understanding and create a path towards reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. DWF’s work centres around improving the lives of Indigenous people by building awareness, education, and connections between all Canadians. The Fund is an Indigenous-led organization with a core team of individuals who are committed to moving our mission forward. We are located on the traditional territory of many nations including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee, and the Wendat peoples and is now home to many diverse First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. We acknowledge that the area is covered by Treaty 13 signed with the Mississaugas of the Credit.

The Honourable Murray Sinclair was a powerful force behind the reconciliation movement. In 2009, he was appointed the Chair of Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission. He ensured that more than 6,000 Survivors of residential schools were able to share their truth on a national scale and that their stories were properly documented so that everyone in Canada would know the true history of our country. Today, the TRC’s 94 Calls to Action, which came about as a direct result of his efforts and leadership, are considered the path forward on the journey toward reconciliation. This is just one part of his impactful legacy. Our hearts go out to his family, community, and to all those who have considered him a beacon of light over the last 73 years.

DWF Artist Ambassador Kevin Hearn is a renowned multi-instrumentalist, prominently known for his tenure with Barenaked Ladies, as well as a contributor in Secret Path. A respected figure in Toronto’s music scene, Hearn is celebrated also for his solo work, including the exclusive EP 'Kevin Hearn and Friends Present: The Superhero Suite,' a vibrant compilation of vintage superhero-themed music. His solo endeavors allow him creative freedom beyond Barenaked Ladies, exploring deeply personal themes and musical styles. Hearn also worked closely with Lou Reed as musical director and keyboardist. As a non-Indigenous person, Kevin has been a strong advocate for reconciliation and worked closely with Gord Downie during the creation of Secret Path. The Artist Ambassador program connects Indigenous and non-Indigenous creators, Knowledge Keepers, and experts with DWF’s audiences through a variety of engagements and activations.
