Conserving Canadian wetlands and other natural spaces for waterfowl, wildlife, and people for more than 80 years

About us

Wetlands are one of the most important ecosystems on the planet. Unfortunately, up to 70 per cent of wetlands have been lost in settled areas of Canada. More are lost every day. Wetlands do many important jobs for us. They help clean our water. They are home to hundreds of species of wildlife. They protect our communities from flooding and droughts. They store carbon, helping in the fight against climate change. Since 1938, we have been working hard to save Canada’s wetlands. Backed by sound science, we have what it takes to make a real difference. It’s why we’re leading the way in wetland conservation. We know what needs to be done. We know how to do it. Now, more than ever, we need your help.

This week's #DUCMigrationTracker featured observation is a least bittern, observed by iNaturalist user: mjalbert in Ingleside, Ontario. Many species in Canada, such as the least bittern in this observation, are currently threatened. Biodiversity is essential for maintaining healthy environments that all life depends on. Yet, we are facing a global decline in biodiversity, largely driven by habitat loss. To tackle this issue, Ducks Unlimited Canada has been leading efforts to conserve and restore wetlands and other natural spaces for waterfowl, wildlife and people. As leaders in conservation, DUC works not only in Canada but also contributes expertise at a global scale. Four key DUC staff members are currently representing the organization at the UN Biodiversity conference, #COP16Colombia. One focus of COP16 is to turn the commitments from the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (#KMGBF), which aims to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030, into actionable plans. DUC will participate in the Canadian delegation to help shape Canada’s stance on biodiversity conservation as well as participate in panels on sustainable agriculture, discussing the integration of soil health, livestock, crop management and biodiversity. With global biodiversity at a tipping point, DUC's work at COP16 will help ensure a sustainable future where ecosystems thrive and continue to support life. We all have a role to play in this crucial effort, and through continued collaboration, we can protect biodiversity for generations to come. #DucksUnlimitedCanada #WetlandConservation #Habitat #Biodiversity #30x30

Yesterday, October 22, Ducks Unlimited Canada attended the National Climate Adaptation Summit in Ottawa, Ontario. ➡️ Michael Nadler, Chief Executive Officer of Ducks Unlimited Canada, pictured beside Ryan Beierbach, Chair, Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef (CRSB), was able to participate in a panel and highlight the important role nature-based solutions play in climate resilience and the work that DUC is delivering for The Nature Force initiative, in partnership with 17 leading insurance organizations. ➡️ Janine Massey, Chief Marketing and Communications Officer at DUC, participated in a roundtable discussion with Member of Parliament, Adam van Koeverden, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Environment and Climate Change Canada and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Sport and Physical Activity, where we discussed the climate adaptation recommendations put forward by Climate Proof Canada. ➡️ Jim Brennan, National Director of Industry and Government Relations for DUC, met with a cross section of Indigenous, government and industry leaders to discuss climate resilience investment needs in some of Canada’s most at-risk communities. We were proud to discuss our partnership in The Nature Force and would like to thank Climate Proof Canada and the Insurance Bureau of Canada for including us. Through collaborative efforts, DUC is committed to advancing nature-based solutions that protect Canada's most vulnerable regions and build a sustainable future for generations to come. 🌱 📷: ©Blair Gable Photography #Conservation #NatureBasedSolutions #ClimateProofCanada #ClimateResilience

Ducks Unlimited Canada is excited to be participating in #COP16Colombia in Cali. This critical global forum on biodiversity began today and continues through November 1. As the first biodiversity-focused meeting since the groundbreaking 2022 Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework to halt and reverse biodiversity loss, COP16 provides an invaluable opportunity to continue building on the momentum of our work at DUC and for conservation efforts worldwide. Reversing biodiversity decline will take big-picture thinking and focused action. During the next two weeks, we're looking forward to participating in productive discussions and collaborative actions to ensure a healthier, more sustainable future. 🌱🌎 #DucksUnlimitedCanada #UnlimitedTogether #Biodiversity #KMGBF #Conservation #Sustainability #NatureBasedSolutions

Big news from the Global Congress of the International Land Conservation Network in Beaupré, Quebec. It was announced today that the milestone of investing $1.5 billion in private land conservation across the country has been achieved. 🌱 Thanks to Environment and Climate Change Canada and its partners Nature Conservancy of Canada/Conservation de la nature Canada, Wildlife Habitat Canada, the Alliance of Canadian Land Trusts and Ducks Unlimited Canada, more than 1.5 billion has been invested to help conserve private lands across Canada since 2007. More specifically, conservation organizations have delivered $1 billion in funding and land donations to match $500 million from the Government of Canada's Natural Heritage Conservation Program (NHCP). In detail, this investment represents: ➡️ 2,200 habitat conservation projects supported by the NHCP in 350 municipalities. ➡️ 840,000 hectares (2 million acres) of wetlands, forests, grasslands and shoreline habitats conserved, or, an area that equates to nearly 900 NHL-sized hockey rinks. ➡️ Vital habitats conserved for more than 250 species-at-risk. ➡️ 263.2 million tonnes of carbon captured, which is equivalent to taking 24,639,048 passenger vehicles off the road. In advance of next week’s United Nations Biodiversity Conference (#COP16) in Colombia, this funding program is an example of Canadian leadership in nature conservation. To find out more about the projects carried out under the NHCP, take a look at the 2023-2024 report. 👉 https://loom.ly/CjrwhA4 📷: Ducks Unlimited Canada's Mélanie Deslongchamps and NHCP partners with Minister of Environment and Climate Change, The Honourable Steven Guilbeault at the 2024 Global ILCN conference in Quebec. #Biodiversity #HabitatConservation #NatureConservation #30x30

For this week's #DUCMigrationTracker featured observation, we're sharing an excellent example of a Wilson’s snipe using wetland habitat, observed by iNaturalist user: comox in Vancouver, B.C. Wetlands are important habitat for this species and many more. Along with wildlife habitat, other ecosystem services provided by wetlands include water filtration and carbon storage. These services can be an important part of mitigating the impacts of climate change. But more information is needed to help effectively inform climate change policies. Ducks Unlimited Canada researchers are co-leading a project with Dr. Irena Creed at the University of Toronto Scarborough, to help provide evidence for wetlands as nature-based climate-change solutions. “The benefits of conserving wetlands for wildlife and recreation have long been established, but this research will examine the use of wetlands as a climate mitigation tool,” says Pascal Badiou, DUC research scientist. #WetlandConservation #Habitat #NatureBasedSolutions #EcosystemServices
