This article illustrates the $1 Trillion Dollar Time Bomb that is awaiting the residential housing market in the US due to the mispricing of climate risk. Sadly, this is topic of mispriced risk is one I have posted about before and is prevalent across many asset markets, not just housing where this $1T risk exists because of high value properties that are underinsured against the increased risks they face as a result of global climate change. As 2024 is already shaping out to be a record year for hurricanes and wildfires and the trend of increased high impact natural disasters has been prevalent for years now, we are facing a perfect storm of increased risk of natural disasters impacting more high value homes (think California, Florida, Texas), many of which are significantly underinsured. The underinsured properties then put a lot of pressure on over-strapped state and federal agencies to backstop private insurance for these homes. It will be political suicide to actually increase premiums to the point where they cover the risk as this will deter homebuyers, and it will also be highly risky to backstop disasters with federal and state money for underinsured homes as this will mean taxpayers everywhere will be subsidizing these wealthy people's homes. So the problem will be largely ignored in the hopes it doesn't arise which is a disaster waiting to happen. Meanwhile insurance companies are just abandoning many of these markets altogether as a way of avoiding difficult choices (sadly many of these insurance companies abandon homeowners at risk of climate related events, while they continue to invest in assets of fossil fuel companies that are the cause of these climate events). Thus, the problem grows largely ignored (Governor Ron De Santis of Florida has banned the words "Climate Change" from any official policy briefs) with wishful thinking being the only solution offered at the moment. https://bloom.bg/4fyItdm

A simple way to think about the path to decarbonization is that we have to electrify as much as we can and the source of that electrical power generation needs to be renewable energy. That sounds very difficult and light years away to many of us but take a look at this list of countries and the percentage of their power that comes from renewable energy. 7 countries have 100% of their power from renewable sources. 21 countries have over 80%. These countries range from developed ones like Norway, New Zealand and Iceland to strong emerging markets like Brazil to less developed countries like Paraguay, Ethiopia and Bhutan. Even oil rich countries like Venezuela are on this list. The point is that this is not impossible as demonstrated around the world, and if all of these countries can do it there is no reason the US at 21% of power from renewable sources needs to remain that low! https://lnkd.in/gduitX5U #renewableenergy #decarbonization

As we celebrate Earth Day 2024 and many corporations use this day to signal their green bonafides, I am struck by how few people understand that climate risk is indeed financial risk. Companies protesting against disclosure, or failing to take stock of their emissions and the risk in their value chains, are providing an inherent disservice to investors and stakeholders by hiding the costs of these risks. Investors are also guilty of not forcing more transparency which would ensure that these costs are baked into asset values. On this day to celebrate our planet, I would like to believe that corporations and investors are not doing this with the intent to hide or deceive, but rather, because of a lack of tools and knowledge. At EcoAdvisors and EcoInvestors we help you to understand how to assess the risks of climate change to your business from a disclosure standpoint, for current and forthcoming regulations, and to develop long-term sustainability transition planning so you can turn these risks into opportunities. For Corporate clients, this means having a well-thought-out and documented sustainability transition plan with a transparent measurement and reporting process for stakeholders to follow. For investors, we offer additional climate risk assessment for your portfolio, pathways to achieve your net zero portfolio goals, and advice to your portfolio companies on decarbonization strategies.   #climaterisk, #financialdisclosures,

Climate Risk = Financial Risk – duh!

The afterglow. There's something to be said about shared experiences. Over the last few days, I've enjoyed seeing and hearing about the awe-inspiring experience of others as they too witnessed a total solar eclipse. From where I stood, with some 75+ others at the top of Crabbe Mountain in New Brunswick, we could see Mount Katahdin in Maine off in the distance about 140 miles away fade into darkness as the shadow grew towards us across the international border. Truly incredible. From our solar system to ecosystems, our EcoAdvisors team — Hari Balasubramanian, Shankar Swamy and Anna Mahler — has compiled our reflections on the power of alignment, nature, and luck. Check it out: 👉 https://lnkd.in/enhjVCqb With Earth Month here and Earth Day approaching on April 22, let's continue to harness this power that brings people together no matter where you stand. #systemsthinking #EarthMonth #naturepositive

Let's keep the love going... for Nature! EcoAdvisors has embarked on its #TNFD Journey to formally identify, assess, respond to, and disclose nature-related risks and opportunities. Who are we doing this for? For the people we love - our kids, our family, our friends, and future generations. "When we talk about nature-related risks and opportunities in heartfelt, human-centric terms, we're talking about risks that will hurt the people and the things you love and opportunities that can help fulfill their wildest aspirations." Part 1 of our TNFD Journey starts here: 👉 https://lnkd.in/gJCcFrQJ #tnfdearlyadopter #naturepositive
