  • Ecofish is collaborating with the Salmon Coast Society, Musgamagw Dzawada’enuxw Fisheries Group (MDFG), and researchers from the University of Toronto and University of Victoria to better understand the effects of forest harvesting and other cumulative disturbances on Pacific salmon populations in coastal British Columbia. Supported by the BC Salmon Restoration and Innovation Fund (BC SRIF), the project includes several key components, such as blending local Traditional Knowledge from MDFG territories with Western science to inform both forest and salmon management strategies.   Ecofish’s spatial data analysis team has reconstructed forest harvest history from 1880 to the present across 1,745 salmon-bearing watersheds identified in Fisheries and Oceans Canada’s New Salmon Escapement Database System. Trends in forest disturbance and salmon abundance are being assessed over time and across different watersheds.   In recognition of National Forest Week, this work highlights the crucial role forests play in preserving salmon populations and demonstrates the integration of Two-Eyed Seeing: Welcoming all knowledge to sustain our forests. #nationalforestweek

  • Ecofish contributed to a watershed restoration planning study for the Gold River on Vancouver Island, which led to the selection of a gravel placement and flow management project at Muchalat Lake's outlet. We are currently designing and analyzing an innovative approach to partially constrict the lake’s outlet channel, utilizing passive water storage to enhance summer low flows downstream—an essential adaptation for a river severely impacted by drought in recent years.   In partnership with the Mowachaht/Muchalaht First Nation, this project is designed to boost populations of culturally significant salmon and trout within their territory. As a process-based solution, the flow constriction requires no ongoing maintenance, offering a sustainable response to the impacts of climate change and logging.   At Ecofish, we are committed to upholding the spirit of World Rivers Day by contributing to the protection and sustainable management of rivers and their ecosystems. #worldriversday

  • Ecofish Research Ltd., a Trinity Consultants Team is pleased to share that Fisheries Scientist, Will Twardek, Ph.D., R.P.Bio., is attending the USGS workshop on “Managed Relocation: Addressing the Nexus of Climate Change, Invasive Species, and Fish & Wildlife Health,” at the University of Minnesota this week! Will has made significant contributions to the field of conservation during his academic and professional career. Some of his most recent work focuses on the application of assisted migration as a strategy to help species adapt to climate change. Working with Parks Canada, Carleton University, and the Canadian Centre for Evidence-based Conservation, Will led a comprehensive literature review on this approach, which explored how moving species to more suitable habitats could help them survive in our rapidly changing world. This work, published in Biological Conservation, also included a critical analysis of the risks associated with species introductions, such as the potential for creating invasive species. The USGS workshop will gather experts to explore the scientific understanding of managed relocation, focusing on its risks and benefits and identifying critical research priorities. With his deep expertise in population and fisheries ecology, including statistical analysis and extensive fieldwork across Canada, Will brings valuable insights to this important discussion. His participation underscores Ecofish’s commitment to advancing environmental science and sustainability. #USGSWorkshop #climatechange #environmentalscience
